Cab 1L remotes are great for kids my Son loves using one he has for years, I taught him. They are so much better than an app for kids to use imo. The buttons are good for coordination and problem solving. Thanks so much for this series..

The biggest problem I have with this is there is no printed manual. They put a manual in the box for every engine, there isn't even a PDF version on the website. This is the first command controller I and many people own, we don't know what all the symbols on the remote mean. I noticed going on the online forums that people like me who've never owned command control are really frustrated.

I only have two Legacy locos to date and plan to wait to purchase a Base 3 until the kinks get worked out. The Bluetooth side of the app does most of the Legacy features I care about. The main exception is that I can't run a consist powered by multiple locos.😢

Finally this thing explained coherently- I think I’ll give it a try. As my layout expands and desires for future modules come into play, I see its utility. ‘Seems like Lionel went through great pains to wrap up the ever expanding control octopus they’ve generated and hats off to the effort. However… I would like to see, Lionel or 3rd party, an actual physical controller to augment this experience and nothing Lionel says about “can’t” as we drop 2-grand per on these overpriced man-toys will convince me there’s not market for this!

Another thought… Base 3.1 should include an Ethernet cable connector. No worries connecting to your household WiFi and no worries sharing radio frequency workload with family WiFi downloading, streaming, etc, but still full network connectivity. 😜

Cool! I just got mine in the mail yesterday! I pre-ordered it years ago and I assumed they cancelled it some time ago after the promised release date came and went a long time ago. I hope they design and release a new controller for it next -- maybe a new modernized version of the Cab2 remote! And I wonder who has more than 99 locomotives... I have an Orbi mesh network and it doesn’t have a labeled WPS, but it does have a sync button that I found severs as that function when setting up my Base 3.

Sean - I believe one of the benefits of the new base 3 if you are a Cab 1 user, and didn't splash out $$$ for a Cab 2, is that Base 3 in combination with the Cab 3 App, will open up all the full capabilities of legacy engines (like Acela and the Big Boy) through the Aux keys, that Cab 1 users couldn't access before. Do you agree?

Thanks for the awesome video Sean! I’m relatively new to the hobby and have just been buying engines here and there without paying much attention as to the control system they were built for. Long story short, I have a 2004 TMCC engine that I’ve been operating with a simple transformer (Lionel CW-80 80-Watt Transformer). Now that I have the Base 3 and plan to use the Cab 3 app, I’m wondering about two things: (1) now that I’m connecting the Base 3 to the track, do I no longer need the old transformer power the track? (2) am I programming the 2004 TMCC engine using the Base 3/Cab 3 only - I think that’s what I got from the video

No, All Lionel command systems just send signals and have nothing to do with track power, so you still need track power. It should be a constant 18v (doesn't have to be exact but right around 18v). So, you still need a transformer. Yes, you can simply program in your engine with the CAB3 app.

I'm new to any Legacy i just had a old transformer as a kid so please do a video with the cab 1L remote with the base 3 cause I think the remote will be alot easier 4 me to operate ive been buying new engines but just laying track have no remotes yet never had a engine that made noises lol just getting back into the hobby so please do sum videos with the new CAB 1 L remote for us older guys that don't want the confusing app we rather use the simpler remote so pretty please do a video with the remote 4 us older generation

I do have 1 question, when using multiple remotes like 2 cab 2 (901-903) or a cab1L and a cab 2, should they be on different channels on the cab 3 or set them all to the same channel? All the same channel. They must be on same channel as the base or they won't communicate.

What router are you using? I have trouble connecting to my router and looking to upgrade.

I use the new mesh systems, which are pretty much the new standard instead of a single router. Mine happens to be TPLink's, but I have had NexGear's Orbi system too. Regardless of system you should be able to get it to connect to your router. Did you try to follow the manual setup instead of the automated WPS setup? Control.Lionel.com has instructions now.

Question: I have my base 2 run through a Lionel TPC300 using the big data plug and cord that plugs into the back of the base 2. This way I can set the TPC to command and run all my TMCC and Legacy engines, or change it to conventional and run all my older conventional engines, all on the same track with my Cab2 (just not at the same time). The Base 3 has no data plug. Do you know of any way to use the Base 3 to run conventional engines?

Aux 3 should work if you have the correct engine programmed. It has to know it's the Class A.

No, you cannot control MTH engines with Lionel's system, never could. You can only control Lionel engines with MTH's system by using the SER Module. Same as before.

Chain up modules. Do you mean Daisy Chain the LCS modules? If so, each module has 2 PDI ports on them. You simply connect them together with PDI cables using the ports. Incoming cable goes to one port and outgoing cable to the other until you have them all strung together. Does not matter which port on the module you use as is in or out. then finally one cable plugs into back of Base 3 into 1 of the 3 PDI ports.

Hey Sean, the pairing of the LionChief was pretty straightforward but I’ve been unable to connect a LionChief + 2.0. I don’t have previous legacy systems. Do you know what the process is to connect a LC + 2.0 engine to the Base3?

No, just follow the instruction on the website (control.lionel.com) under the Wi-Fi setup section for No WPS.

Based on what Sean covered, it doesn't sound like the function of the Sensor Track really changes with Base-3. The Sensor Track became the easiest (or at least most convenient) way to program an engines' detailed information somewhat quickly when Lionel stopped supplying Orange modules with new engines. All of that info could have been (and presumably still can be) entered manually via either CAB-2/CAB-1L or the app (though it is much slower to enter everything manually). If you meant to transfer the info from an old Legacy Base, that was the part he was covering with the Black module that will (hopefully) become easier to do bulk transfers of multiple engines once the Base-3 Utility program is available sometime in September.

sean, another issue with these apps. it seams if you are going to be on the lionel access point network to use the lionel cab3 app. then you have to disconnect to the lionel network and connect to the mth access point on the wiu. to be able to run dcs engines through thier app. guess if you had two phones or tablets they would each be connect to thier respective control unit. this makes using one remote to control all your engines non relevant again. that seems at least to me the only down side to these apps.

If you don't use access point and use your home network for both, then you can use one device (although its 2 apps). But if using access point then you are correct.

Absolutely. A computer is not required. As a matter of fact, you can do all your updates from your phone to the Base now.

Good presentation. One other thing to lok at is the TR function on this app. I and others can not get the app to control the power output on a ZW-L. Probably same problem with ZW-C. Another thing for you to show is how to easily (if it is easy) switch from one loco to another. Personally I'm very disappointed with this unit and the app. The CAB2 remote is a far superior control to operate trains than the CAB3 app in my opinion. If you make a fat finger mistake bad things can happen.

Green is for Wi-Fi activity from your device to the Base3. So, every tap would send a command, and it will blink Green. Red would only be for Lionchief RF activity. I think you have your engine programmed wrong. Possibly you have the RF switch in wrong position when you programmed it? A Legacy engine will not respond if programmed as an RF engine. control.lionel.com/docs/base3-indication-lights/

@@Glenn_Mead Its not the switch position I was after, but did you program in your Legacy engine as an RF engine, because that won't work. If you download the Base3 system Utility, you can connect to the base and see exactly how you have the engine programmed. Or just try and reprogram the engine. My guess is it is not programmed correctly if it does not move or respond.

No, it is separate and the only remote New that Lionel sells is the Blue CAB1-L. The legacy (gray) remote I showed has to be purchased on the secondary market if you want one of those types.

You don’t have to have a WPS button, it’s just more convenient. You can do it manually, Lionel has it out on their website Control.lionel.com

@@seanstraindepot I tried that, but it seems like I need the new legacy update utility on my pc for it to work and configure the settings. I can get it to work with the old utility but only when the USB cable is connected to the computer and the Base 3. I e mailed Lionel, but they just sent me to the web page and those instructions don't seem to work for me, unless I am doing something wrong. Not sure what to do next. I also was able to connect the Cab 2 remote to the base 3 successfully. my Base 3 shipped with using channel 1 on my Cab 2 was already on channel 1 so that worked out well, it's just the Wi-Fi connection that's giving me trouble and like you said the brake function on the phone app isn't working. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my comment.

I like the Wi-Fi better because I don't have to switch networks on my iPhone each time that I use the app, I can just keep my phone on my home Wi-Fi network. Thanks for your help,

You must Use the Aux2 key to get to the lighting menu. Hold the Aux key down for 2 secs. A quick tap won't bring up the menu.

I’m trying to use system and it says no base unit available make sure the Cab3 has permission to connect to local Internet. No offense, but I got mad and when I was trying to fix the issue, I ended up breaking the stupid antenna I emailed Lionel and told them that their system is not compatible with my Internet and I have to go downtown to my storage facility and get the one remote that it will connect to which is my cab-1L remote

Thats too bad. The Antenna is only used if you are using one of the handheld remotes. So, you can still use the Cab3 app. There are 2 ways to connect to your wi-fi (Access Point, Home Network). Try Access point first. Flip the switch on the front to AP, then open your phones wi-fi settings and select the wi-fi network with Base 3 in the name to connect to it.

Hello, I am new to the hobby and the Base3 and I thought maybe I could ask here a question that somebody would be kind to answer: I have a Lionel Legacy engine and it does not want to connect to the Base3 (I am using Cab3 App). I DO NOT have a wired connection though from the Base3 to the transformer /track - is that wire necessary for this to work?

Yes, you do, or no signal can get to the engine. You have to program the engine too.

The process is the same as it was with the TMCC base, or Base1-L. Put engine switch in program mode, press eng, type in number, press set button. That process has not changed.

Thats the layout. It has background sounds when it's powered up, lol. I need to put in a switch to turn that off when doing videos. lol.

Speaking of switch, I have an idea of a 3 way switch to control the background sounds. 0=off 1=day time sounds 2=night time sounds And what if you get a sound to tell you what sound mode you are on? Like if you shift to day time sounds, you'll be greeted by the sound of a rooster crowing and then the sound kicks on. And when you shift to night time sounds, you'll be greeted by the sound of an owl hoot. What do you think of this?

Who knows what will happen in future. But it does have a remote available to use now. The CAB1-L which they make to go with it.

Maybe after watching your video, I won't throw the new base in the trash. Two hours of Base Three fun...not. Keeps crashing on the Apple Ipad and will not properly load engines especially the Bluetooth Lionchief 2.0's. I've just spend two hours with no success. Poor instructions and no manual from Lionel. Speed bar flickers and get out of control and have to run to the transformer to shut the track down. App crashes constantly and will not stay connected to the wifi. You have to use the local area network only to connect. WIFI does not configure. This is so poorly made and designed with too many bugs. Very disappointed. You cannot safely switch from train to train in time to control them...that is if they connect at all and the app doesn't crash on you. So unreliable. I would not trust my investment running 5 locomotives on three tracks with this thing.

Hi, sorry my schedule is so packed with full time work and everything else I unfortunately can't help individual's setup their systems. But All the Base 3 videos will show almost everything. The initial setup is just connecting 1 wire to the outside rail or U post of your transformer and downloading the app, then setting up Wi-Fi. Go to control.lionel.com and they have it separated out into nice sections (setup, app, wifi, etc.). Or just go ahead and ask questions here and multiple people can help answer them. Thanks!
