A video analysis containing examples of Lionel Messi creates time and space on the ball. The analysis was done using footage from a clash between Barcelona and Real Madrid at the Camp Nou in February 2013
Lionel Messi through movement and sometimes lack of movement has various ways he creates space on the pitch. This video takes a look at some of those ways.
Good football education for both coaches and players a like.

movement is a really important thing in football and could have great impact in games. as the same time, fans usually don't pay much attention to it

What does he mean by positioning in line with defenders shoulders
@adroit3165

@@Jamal-gw5op basically standing in such a way that the defender can’t track him and the ball at the same time. Makes defending hard for the opponent. Usually referred to as standing on the ‘blindside’ of the oppo.

Alex Gorecki That's why he is the best in history.. He understand the game. While Ronaldo just looking to run into box for tap ins. Messi is playmaker

@trunksbriefs4132 9 жыл бұрын
Sexy Beast No, that makes no sense, even a goal poacher like Ruud van Nistelrooy or Gerd Muller has to have awareness and understanding to be in place for a 'tap-in'. Are we also forgetting that Ronaldo (16) is second behind Messi (18) when it comes to assists in La Liga? He doesn't score and make those goals without knowing how the game works.
@sexybeast7728
@sexybeast7728 9 жыл бұрын
I was talking about different kind of understanding. You can't look at stats for everything. Just watch Messi and then watch Ronaldo. Who is the better playmaker? Messi by far. While Messi does assists like the one that got disallowed against Athletic in Saturday. Ronaldo does 4 meters passes to the closest teammate. That's not called playmaking. That's called "i am playing in Real Madrid with billions euro worth teammates around me"
@trunksbriefs4132
@trunksbriefs4132 9 жыл бұрын
Sexy Beast I won't disagree with Messi, as a playmaker, he reminds me of Michael Laudrup and his passing is without a doubt better but I feel that you're undermining Ronaldo. Don't forget that Messi also has teammates about as expensive and their teams have different styles of play.

Reminds me a bit of Brazil Ronaldo how he moves away from the ball and lets play develop in order to create space. Similar to the intelligent movement of Iniesta and Xavi. Brilliant football brain to match extraordinary talent.

In this video, Messi is playing cf which is similar to striker. But his actual role within the team is a false 9, a striker who drops deep, sometimes into the midfield, to create space for the wingers, and link up with the other midfielders. Nowadays, he can do this, or play as a right winger who does similar things, dropping deep, linking up, and when he plays wing he inverts.

Call me stupid, but am I the only one who noticed that the result in the end was not good for Barca? I admit that in some situations the way he created space for himself was good and clever, but... He never rec'd the ball near to the goal. Everytime away, with atleast 2-3 defenders in front of him, and almost always forced to pass back or sideways. I think if he plays like this the whole game long (not scoring goals but just wandering around), the defenders will be pretty happy, as we can see by the final result...

+Uzman Messi Who the fuck cares??? I don't, since I'm not a fan of Real M. And if you were inteligent enough, you could notice by my avatar, that I"m fan of AC Milan. And what football or any other inteligence could I expect from a woman, who instead to comment the useless moves of Messi, shown in this video, prefers to ask a dump question about Real M. Next time try to ask something more inteligent, if you could.

Rayno Raynov False 9 Player or called as " Player Number 9" is actually a joker... Which means he is meant to make defenders go like " UMMM... WHAT THE HELL IS THIS PLAYER DOING!!!" A False 9 player can get down the pitch and help Midfield to possession or create some chances that might be dangerous from a World-Class player like Messi and maybe play the role of a Striker. The False 9 player has a lot of work and that's why he has to be so awareness of the surroundings and must be Brilliant/Intelligent.

@mourasantos
@mourasantos 8 жыл бұрын
B Person What are you on about? Moving = positioning. And he isn't doing zilch, other than ambling up and down the field (fairly aimlessly); it's the team around him that's doing all the work. This video is just profoundly idiotic on all levels.
@Keepitonthedeck
@Keepitonthedeck 8 жыл бұрын
+Situations103 I think you'll find it's game intelligence to be able to position himself according to shape and cover positions the opposition will pick up in relation to the ball.....genius.
@mourasantos
@mourasantos 8 жыл бұрын
Keepitonthedeck except he's not doing that. His off-the-ball movement is indolent - at best - here. He takes two steps to the left and you pause the video to rave about his intelligent positioning and genius awareness. It's all terribly embarrassing.
@riqui5406
@riqui5406 8 жыл бұрын
Situations103 yes, well if that kind of movement can help jim score 50 goals a season, create 20 and win 26 trophies, then why are you hating. Messi is all about efficiency. The Barcelona system has always been about getting the best out of Messi and therefore he is not required to run all over the place, but to move efficiently in order to get the ball in dangerous positions. So yes, it might only be two steps to the left. But those two steps are quick and efficient and get him 3 to 4 meters of space in front of his defender, enough for him to do damage. So I do not see why you think is is stupid. It is obviously very intelligent movement if this player dominates european football regularly. Let's not forget that even though Messi has all the technical skills, he is also the smartest player on the pitch. It's all about quick and efficient movement to get that bit of space in between the lines. If you observe any good attacking midfielder/creative forward you will see the same kind of movement.

Not Laziness but efficient energy use. Professional Footballers are some of the fittest people on the planet but only have a limited number of sprints/ energy tank to play out the match. What the Barca manager and Messi realise is that to help the team the most, Messi's energy is better used to damage the opposition and score/create goals than to track back and sit in. Messi very intelligently stays still and lets the other teams movement get him into space instead of always using the typical means of running into space which is much more energy consuming. By doing this, he reserves his energy to do damage to the other team with his dribbling and creativity around the box. I'am sure this is exactly what the manager, Pique, Mascherano etc. want from him. The most team oriented thing you can do in football is score/create goals as this helps out every single player on the pitch.
@raffa4456
@raffa4456 6 жыл бұрын
It's true. He plays almost every match, making offensive players defend less is a good way to keep them fit. It has it's downsides, but having him there and not insured is worth a lot more if you have people like busquets on the field that are really good at defending stategically and intelligently. His coaches even say that he runs the least on the pitch, but he's the one that is most aware of everything bc he analyzes other players' movements a lot.
