actually there is a better freekick taker than leo. he is called juninho. and its not even close. of course leo is in the discussion as well, but juninho is a clearly better freekick taker. IIRC juninho scored 45/100 goals for lyon by direct freekick, which is an isane quote. and this wasnt the only club he played for. he is a brazilian. seek out a compilation here. he is just brillant, it has to be said - if you enjoy leos freekicks you're in for an absolute treat. also: in "many" messi stats you will find someone who bested him - it is the fact that messi is basically everywhere relevant near or at the top, while juninho "only" truly shines in freekicks. playmaker stats are obviously in his favor ( easily most assists asoasf), but he isnt the "best" striker ( of course he isnt, he is a playmaker ^^). also: seek out the kevin prince boateng interview ( its about an hour and can be found here on youtube). there he speaks briefly about his time in barcelona and how good messi is in training and champions league warm up routine ( lol, seek it out, its hilarious). these statements are the most valuable, if you want to fathom messis greatness. first hand experiences from other fully grown professionals that trained and played with him who start talking like kids as soon as they have to speak about him. he basically said out of 100 messi didnt score 2 or 3, because of incredible goalkeeper saves. if you believe boateng, messi "just does not miss". which strikes me as normal, because i accepted the fact that some entity must have touched his left leg when he was very small. with entity-power you dont miss.

MESSI v RONALDO Much has been said about these two legends whose iconic careers spanned the best part of the last two decades where they have stood head and shoulders above any other footballer, scoring 1600 goals and winning 12 Balon d’Ors between them. If anything, all the passionate “debaters” should consider themselves extremely fortunate to have witnessed Messi and Ronaldo take the game of football forward. However as human beings we all have our own individual preferences about who we like more among the two and in some immature cases, who we like and who we hate. Before I proceed I would like to make two facts clear. ONE - A mature / well formed individual cannot possibly like one among these two but hate the other. That does not make you a fan or a football lover. It just makes you a hater. Yes, you may like one more than the other. But if you know anything about football you cannot hate the other. These two are the greatest footballers in history, period. Both came from humble backgrounds,to add on, Messi having autism and a growth hormone deficiency and Ronaldo having a troubled childhood. TWO - If you are debating as to who is the G.O.A.T, remember that if you like one of the two more, naturally your opinion is going to be biased towards that player. It is important to remember that when two players who are competing at the highest level and more or less equally matched, things can change based on performances/tournaments/trophies etc. So ?just because you felt one of them was the G.O.A.T in 2010 does not mean that is the case 10 years later. Here’s my thought on the matter. I think Cristiano Ronaldo is the pinnacle of what an athlete can be in terms of his dedication to stay fit, hone his skills and will remain an inspiration for any human being let alone a footballer. The passion with which he plays the game at the age of 38 after having achieved so much is unreal. I have no idea what logic a Messi fan has, to hate/disrespect him. At the same time I think Messi’s ability to read the game ahead of other players and create chances that defy the laws of physics have never before been seen in football. He has always put team above himself and has created more chances for his team to score than any player in history. I have no idea how a Ronaldo fan can ignore these facts just to hate on Messi. I am not going into statistics here because I did my research online about their numbers and it was impossible to pick one player who is ahead by a mile. You cannot go with how many Balon d’Ors alone or how many Champions League alone or even how many goals scored. You have to read into the body of work of each player and how they have contributed to their team. But for a run down of stats please go to Messi vs Ronaldo - All Time Career Goals and Stats Beyond these stats, there were years where I kept the bias of my personal preference aside and acknowledge that the other player was probably the G.O.A.T. But now that almost two decades have passed by, a clear winner as to who the G.O.A.T is, has emerged, and that is Lionel Messi. Because once the club stats were read through, what was left was the Global stage - the world cups. This is where the role as a captain comes into play. Both these athletes are not just strikers/ forwards/ play makers or club athletes. They have also been captains of two footballing powerhouses (if you see the FIFA rankings over the years)- Portugal and Argentina, for around 10 years or more. And if you are debating, this role also has to be considered. Messi has single handedly taken what is,at best, an average Argentina team to two world cup finals. The first was in 2014. It was so obvious that the team was just waiting for him to do it all. Things became worse until he retired temporarily in 2016 and also the forgettable world cup outing of 2018. (A phase when in my mind the G.O.A.T discussion was tilted more towards Ronaldo). Messi’s role as captain and leader has been pivotal in building the team around him, inspiring the youngsters to play as a team and it is quite obvious in all the matches that they have a chemistry and it is this chemistry that wins tournaments at the highest level. As a result one sees that after 5 world cups, Ronaldo has not scored a single goal in a knockout stage game whereas Messi remains the only player to have scored in all stages of a world cup - from group stage to the final and has been Player of the World Cup twice in his career. So when you take the stints of Euro cups / Copa America / Champions Leagues/ World Cups/ career longevity, consistency and team playing into consideration - I think Lionel Messi is the G.O.A.T. Some may argue about Pele / Maradona etc. I haven’t watched them play, unfortunately. Can the opinion change? Well if Ronaldo returns to Europe (he has said previously that he did not want to end his career in the Middle East) and more importantly, if Ronaldo at 41 inspires Portugal to win the World cup 2026 then, perhaps. But until then, I think the debate, at least in my mind was settled a while back and cemented on Dec 18, 2022. May these two legends continue to take football ahead and however their careers end, will clearly remain the greatest footballers to ever have existed.
