The first world cup for Leo Messi as a starter in the national team and newly crowned best player in the world. The 22 year old didn’t score any goals in the tournament but was heavily involved in most of the goals Argentina scored. With Diego Maradona as coach, the Argentines steamrolled all opposition until they faced Germany in the quarters where they got humiliated with a 4-0 defeat, and Leo finished the tournament in tears.

I willl never forget i were so sad after they lost to germany 4-0 i went out alone and was riding around with my bike and listened to conte partiro by andrea bocelli when that happened I was only 17-18 years old and now when im 30 years old I finally got to see Leo win the world cup and when i think about it it still feels unreal to me it is just so perfect when you have watched every game in Leos career its so crazy its so perfect that its like a movie or something the movie about Leo Messi will surely be the best and most dramatic movie of all times!!!

Not underrated, never been rated. Maradona failed as a coach in this tournament, he should've built the team around Messi not the other way around. Scaloni learned and achieved it! Like Pep did. Like Luis Enrquie did. Like how Valverde almost did. When you have Messi you builed your team around him in a way to utilize all his potential because he has the most potential out in any player ever! That's why he is the best, not because his goals or assists or his ballond dors and trophies. No because he has the most potential!!

Don't get it twisted. He DID make Messi the focal point. But the problem was that he played him wrong positionally. Maradona believed Messi to be another version of himself - a classic #10 playmaker from the middle of the field. And while Messi is indeed one of the all-time playmakers, he isn't the classic #10 that Maradona was. Messi is much, much more effective a bit more forward on the pitch as employed by Pep. Maradona failed to utilize Messi correctly

Para mi este es el mejor Messi de los mundiales que jugo, tenía velocidad, pase, definición. Pero maradona lo mato poniéndolo de mediapunta o de 10 , posición en la que messi no se desempeñaba, el estaba acostumbrado a jugar de falso 9 o extremo en el sistema de Guardiola. Maradona quizo hacerlo un maradona osea lo puso en la posición en la que el jugaba, pero messi en ese momento no tenía la visión de juego como ahora era más que nada un delantero explosivo que hacía goles, poco a poco fue evolucionando en esa posición de 10 hasta llegar a lo que es hoy, así que le tenemos que agradecer a Maradona que lo hizo debutar en esa posición, pero desperdicio quizá al mejor messi de todos.

The charm of that messi was completely different, considering how other worldly he still is! He looked in condition and did other-worldly stuff then, those times, that messi. Right here after their current fate in the world cup, eight years later. Watched this, just melted in my space, sighed and dropped off my seat! It was not tears, don't know that indescribable emotion. This man has had such a long stint, that it seems like eras of messi that we've gotten to see in a span of three world cups! times change, messi has changed from that fresh,effervescent on pitch youngster to a tired,ageing superstar man, whose shoulders have been descended low from carrying the weight of the nation himself, but the only thing that has remained constant is destiny.

This was the time I started watching football and following Messi, I was 10 years then, I wanted to watch cricket and my parents were like try watching the quarter finals of the world cup, Messi is brilliant, I was like who?
