Lionel Sanders is able to overthink and underprocess at the same time. My dude is genetically gifted but also intellectually broken.

💀 haha kinda rough but true. These were old videos, I'm guessing he's learned at lot in the last couple of years

I don’t think he signed clause 5.8 of his contract. He is a dickhead Jesse. Back to normal programming please.

Nice video Jesse, keep them coming! I also followed Lionel along for a while, always wanted him to get the win at Kona but he seemed to just keep making the same mistakes over and over again, which was frustrating both for him and his viewers, although whether that is actually what happened or if his key rivals Patrick Lange & Jan Frodeno were just too good is another question.

Can someone PLEASE buy him an air conditioner and a decent fan?

Jesse these videos are awesome. The way you articulate quite complex coaching views is really well done. As somebody whos recently swapped from xc mtb to triathlon on a TT bike, your comments about specificity in being in the position and getting hours on the TT bike to adapt are spot on. Keep making great content

Excellent points, particularly about being on the road bike indoors.

I think what the footage from Lionel’s video shows is that the combination of the physiological advantages from outstanding genetics plus an iron drive and determination mentally is unbeatable and overrides almost any other factor. He is (or was) literally the best in the world and even from this short video clip you can, as you say, see that both his training environment as well as his grasp of basic training concepts is pretty unexceptional! However, one area I do disagree with you is in criticising his obsession with power numbers and indoor training - unlike other forms of road racing, the triathlon bike leg is pretty much just a case of sticking your head down and sticking almost watt-perfect to a given power number that you know is the maximum you can sustain for the target event duration.

I think Lionel's point is maybe it was a general trend, so he would consistently veer off the prescribed efforts. Also he seems to have some issues with the efforts. I mean he can talk, so it must not be extremely hard, but he is soooo unstable. That can't be very powerful. Whether he improved that much over the years I'm not sure though. He seems to still be going to races ending up walking during the marathon.

I find it interesting(concerning maybe?) that Lionel is always on the tops of his road bike. I mean as an Ironman athlete why would you need to sit up so much when you should be extremely conditioned to not only an extreme position but putting out high power in an extreme position for long periods

Never heard of him. But I like how Jesse sees the positive and commendable things that he is doing. Guy seems pretty cooked thou
