I'm 61 and a specifically look for battery operated trains because when I was young I wasn't allowed to have electric, I have this at home on display I really enjoyed this one more than the Harry Potter I like the idol on the track feature 🙃🙂I haven't played with mine in a while and I saw the video puting in the batteries in the engine hun? that was weird, then I looked at all the comments below and I was educated thanks everybody I love the one I have! Fun fact the polar Express was based off a real locomotive the Berkshire 1225 locomotive built by lima locomotive works in 1941

if you want more cars, you can look on eBay or maybe Amazon, but most likely you would have to buy a complete second set, LIONEL does not sell these cars in this scale as separate sale items. They do however sell the track as separate, so you can buy straights, curves, and switches to expand your layout. Hopes this helps, I've been with Lionel for over forty years now, so experience is key.

I had to return mine. The battery cover wouldn't come off. Got it off once then the screw just turned and turned after that. Shame cause I was really looking forward to adding this to my collection. Got the red version of the polar express but sounds like the motor is going faulty already.

Does anyone know when this train first came out? And when they redesigned it and why? Was there a change in manufacturer? I bought my Dad this train from Walmart in 2019 and found that the additional passenger cars I got off eBay for my set that I bought a few years earlier would not work on his. The track width had changed. Also the Batteries were now in the engine and not the tender. Originally the track matched up with the New Bright, Echo, Scientific Toys? But the new one??? Why did it change? From what I can tell the only way I can spot the "new" sets out of the box now is the silver ring around the engines drive wheels (The old sets did show the ring on the drive wheels painted in the box artwork. But were just one color on the actual engine.) Of course also the batteries moved and also the observation car no longer has the "footprints" in the snow or the flip up hobo.

Lionel produced the o gauge polar express about 17 years ago meanwhile the battery operated set came out in 2007 and got rereleased in 2018 . As far as I know Lionel and American Flyer produce these trains only.

Hey Perry when older trains set first came out 2005. it was true Lionel G Gauge. was able to run on real model g gauge track and look great running on the metal track. BUT leave it up to LIONEL TOO F-UP with the newer releases SKU: 7-11803 and above. they changed how wide the wheels sets were. making the wider so no longer ture g gauge try matching the .sku number or match the pic of the passenger cars trucks .....BOTTOMS.... shape from your Dads set . to the cars your trying to by on ebay

They change the track width for the benefit of profits. The older version trains were able to operate on 1.75 gauge track from different manufacturers but with the wider gauge, which is 2.00, one will have to purchase the wider gauge track from Lionel only, because 2.0 gauge is distinctly for Lionel Ready to Run trains. I recently purchased 96 pieces of straight from Lionel via Amazon. If this was 1.75 gauge track, I wouldn't had to purchase 96 pieces of track because I already had 96 pieces of track at my residence. Inconclusion, the 96 pieces of track that I did purchased were much cheaper than my Brass track the I recently purchased costing me close to $500.00.

I actually find it ironic that the G gauge Polar Express coaches (which are practically toys for five year olds) are actually the most accurate to the movie as far as the proportions. The shape of the coaches, the length, height, and the windows, are almost perfectly accurate to the movie. Only the colors are wrong. The reason I find it ironic, is that the polar express merchandise in all of the other scales (which are not meant to be toys, and are actual models for more experienced modelers) are not accurate to the movie. The coaches for all of Lionels other scales of polar express merchandise are inaccurate. They’re always too long, and skinny, and have inaccurate windows that are not evenly spaced. Also, the color on all of the coaches are just wrong. In the movie, the coaches are a dark bluish gray, not a bright tealish blue. All of Lionels polar express merchandise is inaccurate to the movie in someway or another. And I’m just sick of it. Why can’t another company make a model for the polar express that’s *actually based on the movie.*
