The cold-blooded killers in Australia’s coastal waters are armed with jaws... harpoons... and gruesome spikes...But few are as flamboyant as the ‘Lionfish’ (Pterois). It’s named for its long flowing fins that resemble a lion’s mane. Beautiful... But deadly! The lionfish’s irregular outline helps to conceal its presence when viewed from a distance. But up close, its bright colors and bold markings serve as a vivid warning to would-be predators... Also known as ‘Devil Firefish’ and 'ZebraFish', Lionfish are armed with potent venom. Each long flowing dorsal spine is tipped with an extremely sharp point. Glands within these spines produce powerful neurotoxins. In humans, Lionfish envenomation can cause extreme pain, respiratory paralysis... And occasionally death. Their formidable toxins and vivid threat display have earned these fish healthy respect amongst the reef community...

Theyre an invasive species that could cause reef fish population to decline, they are also really good eating. If you kill one, dont be sorry, so many of these out there due to them not being hunted by any type of other fish

Yes, but it is because of us they have became an invasive species. It makes it easier to kill them as a whole by killing them on sight, as they are nowhere close to endangered. They can easily make thousands if not hundreds of species endangered if not put in check. Yes they do serve a purpose, but not in the waters they were introduced in. A school of lionfish can wipe a whole reef in a week if they aren't kept in check.

They taste amazing, too. No joke; where they’re an invasive species, there’s unlimited spearfishing of them, and the seafood restaurant cooks will buy them by the cooler at the docks.

I'm Bahamian and barracuda only occasionally eat these things. The fish are outside of the food chain here and still multiply rapidly with no real predators. In top of the Chinese commercially stripping the reef down here, our reef is dying very fast.

The cornetfish, moray eel, sharks, stonefish and even cormorants have all been observed snacking on these fish. The bold stripes and venomous spines are only somewhat effective.

When I was a kid I always thought that they’d be kind of small fish - even though it’s ‘only the size of a football’ I would NOT want to suddenly see one swimming towards me! I also wouldn’t want to be a small fish in this beautiful but horrific fish’s presence, either. Eek. 😬
