What a wonderful legacy Michael! I'm descended from another member of Morgan's unit, John Cooke, born in London, joined the Bedford County Volunteer Riflemen in 1774, fought at the battle of Point Pleasant (1774) then joined the 12th Virginia in 1776, fought at Brandywine, Germantown, White Marsh. After Valley Forge he transferred to Morgan's Rifle Corps, battle of Monmouth, Westchester, and Stoney Point. Info from his biography "John Cooke, Rifleman".

There is no battle of Winchester during the revolution. Morgan lived most of his life there and unless you count in 1951 when people from Cowpens came to steal his body there was no Revolutionary war battle that I am aware of I may be completely wrong so I apologize if I am.

A Kentucky rifle in the hands of a skilled shooter is still a very deadly weapon today. The design and function is old, but the results are very modern

What they were using wasn't the Kentucky rifle, but a precursor to it called the Pennsylvania rifle.

@@JohnnyRebKy well, there was no Kentucky back then. Daniel Boone would help change some time after the American War for Independence. It was the Pennsylvania rifle that was used in very limited service throughout the war (there's a great deal of myth attached to this.) The Pennsylvania rifle was the result of a large "German" population emigrating to Pennsylvania in the 1750's and adapting their Jaeger rifles for hunting in the new world. These new long barrel designs would become the Pennsylvania rifle. In the next century Kentucky gunsmith would make cap and ball versions known now as the Kentucky rifle.

They moved down into East Tennessee where the Smokey mountain national park is today before Tennessee was even a state. Scots Irish usually get all the glory for that but the Germans came too. What a adventure it would have been !

The militia long rifles range was 250-300 yards compared to the muskets used by both sides which had a range of 100 yards but were not very accurate. This was a significant advantage in range.

There has been more evidence coming out in the last few years that Timothy Murphy didn't shoot Brigadier-General Simon Frasier at Saratoga. According to author Dean Snow, who has gone over the claim in his book "1777, Tipping Point at Saratoga" made the following points. There was never a claim that Murphy shot Frasier until 1845 in the book written by Jeptha Simms. Simms had heard of the claim that was made my Murphy's family after his death in 1818. It was also backed up by the fact that Frasier himself had seen someone in a tree shooting at him from 200 yards. The first shot having cut the crupper strap on Frasier's horse and the second just above the mane between the horse's ears. Frasier's aides saw the danger too and tried to get him to fall back, Frasier refused. Now, at the same time Ebenezer Mattoon was in command of an American cannon crew watched German troops being pushed on by their officers, and Continental troops slowly falling back. Then Broeck's Albany militiamen came up and halted the retreat and reinforced the American line. While Mattoon was directing his gun crew, an older militiaman, came up beside him. At the same time, the Brunswick regiments were advancing and Mattoon and the older gentleman saw British officers behind the Brunswickers, one of them mounted on a gray horse and more conspicuous, that being Simon Frasier. Mattoon stated the distance was under 70 yards and the older militiaman fired, the ball hitting Frasier's left side. Frasier's aides moved into to support him. They were able to keep Frasier on his horse until they got to the British hospital. There was a search in 1973 that failed to find Frasier's remains to try and settle the debate by locating the ball that killed him. More and more historians are leading into Mattoon's account as being what happened to Frasier.

6:08 Timothy Murphy shot General Fraser from 250 yards not 300 yards. How do I know? I visited the Saratoga Battlefield and saw the marker that indicates where the tree stood that Timothy Murphy allegedly was positioned and the marker that indicates where General Simon Fraser was shot in what was then (October 7, 1777) the Barber Wheatfield. The tree Timothy Murphy was positioned in is no longer there and from ground level a knoll blocks the view of the Fraser marker. (From his position in the tree Timothy Murphy would have been able to see over the knoll to shoot General Fraser.) However, when I stood on the knoll I could see both markers. The knoll is half way between the two markers. As any experienced long-range rifleman myself (I use centerfire bolt-action rifles rather than a flintlock rifle) I was able to confidently estimate it was 125 yards in either direction to the markers not 150 yards. (125 yards + 125 yards = 250 yards. It definitely was not 150 yards in either direction which would have equaled 300 yards.)

why? they were the 13 colonies, not the modern USA. they were descendants as far back as can be seen as British. and most of the battles fought ended up being American losses. It was by no means a 'sure thing'. If the French didn't come help the US wouldn't have won shit. But France is more the common enemy of Britain than the colonies were, and they were tired of the war at that point. It wasn't like some big bad USA stomping on the feeble British. that's just US propaganda

One British ship of the line probably had more firepower on it than everything in all the hands of all the rebels put together when the shooting first started. It's sad that so few seem to understand just how unlikely as well as momentous the long struggle and ultimate American victory actually was. "Light Infantry"? I know what it is in the mechanized age, but in the 1770s was there such a thing as heavy infantry? I don't recall the use of armor, but maybe I l'll learn differently.

Light infantry were skirmishers. Outfitted with lighter equipment and (often) rifles instead of muskets, uniforms/outfits that were trimmed down for more running (you often see the normal infantry with the tailcoats and fancy headwear). Some examples are the Austrian and Bayerisch Jäger, 95th regiment on foot, the First Light Infantry Company.

@@paulrevere2379 Yes, it was sort of the nickname and job title of these guys. They'd branch off ahead of the main force to skirmish patrols and mess with anything to harm the enemy forces. Another good example were the Braunschweig Jäger. I think in English it is called Brunswick.

@@arcticharecommand Interesting. Now it makes me wonder if any of those tactics were a conscious extension of the Velites and slingers of the ancient Roman Legions. The irony with modern "light" infantry is that they are the ones who physically carry the heaviest loads, where the "Heavy" infantry carry comparitively very little on their bodies bc the heavy part is the vehicles (armored, etc.) which they ride in. Sometimes I'm slow to mentally shift gear from one era to another.
