1. Against his Kansas role John Brown's plan was a way to a deafeat. In Kansas his role was to start the free state settlers to build a SUCCESFULL local militia against the Missourian proslavery border ruffians. The border states had low % slave population and the Appalachian region was almos lack of slavery system. Later the Appalachian region was prounionist area, where in some area the prounionism was the majority from North Alabama through East Tennessee to West Virginia. A guerilla war would have brought an ally with the proslavery militias, border state local militias (Appalachians) and the federal governmemt army. Lincoln was in Kansas that time and he said the antislavery guerilla actions would be doomed from the start. He was right. 2. John Brown knew his capital punishment would change him a martyr of the abolutionism. He refused any escap plan. In my previous point I wrote Lincoln was right and here I had to say John Brown thought very well! During the first news the majority of the North condemned the Harper's ferry raid. However the capital punishment changed public opinion almost 180 degrees in the North! However, one Northern newspaper warned the south that they should only give prison sentences, because they would turn them into martyr. After the reaction of the Northern public opinion the DEEP SOUTH surprised and the effect of the fire eating politicians became strong. The paranoia from the North became strong feeling in the Deep South. John Brown raid alone was not enough for the social paranoia of the Deep South but the Northern reaction on the capital punishment of John Brown. 3. Funny but 2 death of 2 abolutionists were the important spark for the end of the slavery. Elijah P Lovjoy's death was when John Brown vowed to dedicate his life to the abolition of slavery! The novel of Harriet Beecher Stowe was huge for changing the Northern public opinion could turn to that direction John Brown could become martyr of the abolution! After Lincoln won the presidential election the Deep South paranoia won as well.

He murdered alot of people, but I understand what you mean. They were Southerners, so, indeed he did NOTHING wrong, other than not taking more of those scum with him, but the civil war took care of that problem.
