I'd like to add a comment reference the 80-year-old viewer who thought the movie "stunk." I am a 78-year-old son of a father who died four years ago just shy of his 102nd birthday, and who was a scout pilot during the war in Europe until he was shot-down and sent to a prisoner of camp in Germany. He thought this was a great movie, one of his favorites. Being a member of the greatest generation, he knew firsthand what the war was all about.

When Winston Churchill gave the speech after the Battle Of Britain, the use of the words "finest hour" was the most beautiful words possible. The sacrifices the British made as a country was so paramount, and the way he made public appearances walking the streets with the people and visiting the troops was so brave and uplifting.

Churchill was the best, and I think he was a much better orator and statesman than Hitler ever was. Hitler had to coerce and enslave his people for them to like him while Churchill was chosen by the people.

I recall this mini-series, which I was following with interest at the beginning of the 80s, but which was broadcast very late at night on Algerian television, so that I missed my first session at school and was called in by the principal for my absence, I had honestly explained to him that I had slept late after having viewed the series IKE, for this the principal had not sanctioned me and had ordered me to return to my class, I was only 12 at that time, in 1980, now, as Sinatra said, I'm in the autumn of the year, and it was a very good year.

I was eight years old when I saw this movie. I think it was the first time I had become aware of Ike. I remember this was a Made for Television movie. Of all the Ike movies, this is my favorite movie. The cast in this movie were some of the best actors before the 1980s. I think this was Lee Remick's best movie.

It’s so good to get this series on KZbin for my referring to my students and old friends in Taiwan , Hong Kong and overseas friends . I saw it during my staying in Worcester for orientation on abrasive polishing and bought the pocket book on Jan 29, 1979 in London . Now we ‘re facing would -be world war in the West & the East , those Allie reversed from World War Two .What those lessons we learned and shared for next steps ?

I'm not sure what people want in a tv mini series from 1979. All things considered they did a decent not good job. It is not the caliber of the better WW2 films made in the 60s and 70s.(Longest day, Bridge too far, Midway). You would not expect it to be. I think those films influenced this one.

"In writing thus, the General was but reflecting the views of Eisenhower, in due course to be chief of the invasion forces. On assuming command of the North African expedition, that great leader had from the first preached the doctrine of intimate and continuous co-operation between all Allied fighting men, and saw to it that, at least among his own staff, it was practised with conviction and success. At all times, and especially at moments of crisis, the whole weight of his influence was thrown on the side of unity, and it was decisive. This was not the least of the services he rendered to the Allied cause." page 81 Hyperwar Royal Air Force 1939 1945 Vol III

I think that Ike was a leader. unfortunately, like most other leaders, he at times got talked into doing things that were mistakes. My grandfather was close friends with FDR. My mom worked in Washington during the war. Met Churchill when visited. She was an original CIA analyst. After she married, she went on to become a historian and taught til she was 85 and kept writing til 90. She taught for so long because she said they longer teach the truth, and it was her obligation.

The anti British sentiment in this movie is disgusting. Montgomery was a capable general with a lot of personal quirks and the same can be said about Patton. Mark Clark was promoted beyond his capabilities by his friend Eisenhower and made a big mess of the war in Italy.

@peterpluim7912 9 ай бұрын
@@thomasgreen9454 You can be a prick while being a capable general. Mark Clark was both a prick and out of his wits as was British air chief Marshall Trafford Leigh-Mallory. MacArthur was insufferable and behaved like prick to Nimitz, Marshall, Eisenhower and everyone beyond his entourage but he was a capable general. As far as the reliability of Churchill as a source is concerned, I can recommend the unfiltered diaries of Lord Alanbrooke, the Chief of the Imperial Staff who had to deal with Churchill on a daily basis and who wrote a contemporaneous diary that was not intended for publication. Movies have a tendency to paint the worst of people if useful. If you watch “The Last days of Patton” here on KZbin, you’ll probably be convinced Eisenhower and Bedell Smith were pricks.
