"On the 40th anniversary of the battle of Iwo Jima, over three hundred Japanese and American veterans returned to the island together in peace. It was one of the last major campaigns of WW2 - fought on a tiny island only eight miles square. When the battle was over, nearly 30,000 American and Japanese men were dead. Tens of thousands more were wounded.
This is the story of Iwo Jima, told 40 years after the battle. It follows four Americans and two Japanese as they retrace their memories, exchange stories, and pray that what happened on Iwo Jima will always be remembered and never repeated -- servicemen who survived the hell that was the Pacific War. It originally aired on May 27, 1985.
For many of these brave men, their words presented here are the first time they’ve spoken about their ordeal since 1945 - a silence that has haunted many of them to this day.
