In a naval battle, any ship that surrenders while on fire or taking on water will be counted as destroyed -- the crew are abandoning ship and cannot save the hull from sinking. Capturing ships in FotS is pretty hard and usually requires a boarding action, which are difficult to do when ship cannons have such huge damage output.

Your “last stand" in the settlement was pure glory. That would've been spoke about throughout samurai history. even though you lost it would've been legend. a samurai decendent giving his life for the the country. you're general would have worshipers. he died a samurai. amazing.

you know, i've always thought that garrisons and small mobile army would be enough for holding your homeland from rebels and and invading army, and all the while you take your best army ( the one with bear infantry and royal marines) and just straight up rampaging enemies beyond Kyushu, if you wait until things stabilize and your coffers filled, i don't think the time will be enough

By the time he defeats one army on homeland, one of the factions will be sending another full stack invasion. On the main land they'll have fully upgraded settlements and will begin fielding advanced armies. There's very little hope imo

Yeah he’s screwed, shouldnt have done a republic play through until he was extremely familar with the game again. Should restart and do an imperial victory then play a rise of the samurai campaign

About 3:00, I find it unusual that there appears to be little-to-no difference in winter effects and attrition between regions of Japan in the game. I know the map of the game isn't too large, but there are substantial climatic differences between, say, Cape Sata on Kyūshū and the slopes of Mount Fuji or Southern Ezo/Hokkaidō that probably should be represented.

A LEADER HAS FALLEN! At the City of Tsukushi, Shimazu Tadayoshi was attacked by a Nagaoka Army. He Coordinated his men in a valiant defense and only lost 607 men to their 1240. At Higo, Todo Noritane and his 824 men were attacked by a Sasayama army. Noritane knew his men would not be able to hold out, so he chose not to surrender, but in a honorable act, he and his men held until the last man. He led his men in a valiant last stand, giving their lives to take out an equal number of enemy soldiers. As the army fought on the land, our navy attacked on the water at the Sea of Hyuga and won a naval battle. At Bungo, our army was able to take the city without losing anyone. Then Buzen came under attack by Saga Dogs

Does the A.I. have to follow the same rules for economy and attrition as the player?

Nope especially not on VH difficulty

They follow the same attrition rules but higher difficulty AI gets substantial economic bonuses

You'll be waiting a few years. Traditional is almost impossible.

I don't know where you are in the campaign if you're still playing, but you've messed up by not having Ishin Shishi from the Police Stations. They are powerful agents for converting providences. In my campaign I'm seeing +7% per turn from my Shinsenguime's

You lose shinsengumi and ishin shishi when you declare independence or join the opposite faction.

The Republic still holds. The people of the Republic stand strong in the face of adversity. The Levy units have really became your Republican Army. An army of the people to protect the ideals of freedom and democracy in the face of Shogunate oppression. A glorious army.
