Watch this nonstop and dramatic back-and-forth action that occurred when a pride of 30 lions targeted a thirsty herd of buffalo. The herd comes back and tries its best to rescue the calves of the herd.
Send in your wildlife video here, and earn money: www.latestsightings.com/partn...
This exhilarating sighting was captured by 62-year-old, David Pinkernell, a retired Hewlett Packard employee who enjoys travelling and volunteering for non-profits, while on safari with his wife Carrie and friends of 40 years (Andrea, Brad, and Leslie) in Chitake Springs in Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe.
David tells LatestSightings.com the story: “Our amazing guide, Nick Murry, owner of Bushlife Safaris, put us in the perfect position to see a pride of 30 lions attack 300 very thirsty Cape Buffalo charging down to drink from the only water source available for many miles. We were standing on the edge of a cliff with no other people around, with no idea that we were going to see something extremely rare!”
“While at the waterhole, a dramatic back and forth battle occurred between the lions and buffaloes, the adults were doing their best to rescue the calves and after about 10 minutes at the waterhole the buffaloes ran back up the hillside.”
“As the buffalo ran up the hillside, the two male lions left their initial kills to chase the wounded calves. The two calves who had been rescued by the herd were once again the target and the two male lions went in for the kill this time the adult buffaloes were not able to rescue them.”
“My adrenalin was running and I got quite emotional but this is nature and it happens every day. It is just extremely rare to get footage of it.”
“My wife and I have been on 8 safaris arranged by Africa Adventure Company. On three of our trips, we visited Mana Pools. In 150 days on safari, we had never seen a lion kill. On day 3 of this safari, we saw more than 4 lion kills in less than 7 minutes! It was incredibly rare! Although, only 1 successful”
“We took a big chance travelling during the pandemic and it was quite a logistical challenge getting from the USA to Zimbabwe, but, once we were there, we practically had the national park to ourselves. Thank you to our travel agent Mark Nolting from Africa Adventure Company for helping us organize this incredible safari.”

The fact that some buffaloes saw the lions take one of their own, ran away and returned with the herd tells me their communication is more advanced than we give it credit for.

If they were smart enough they wouldn't run in the first place. They would just create a shield around them. It's 3,4, 5, 10 (?) lions vs how many...200 buffalos? A lion can't take a buffalo alone, yet 200 buffalos are afraid of 5 lions? Herbivores are so, so dumb.

@@MastroOfficial you're right about not running but I think it's more complicated than that , these standoffs can last for hours if not an entire day and the buffalo need to be moving for grazing and drinking

@mkilpatr03
@mkilpatr03 2 жыл бұрын
Well............ it's kind of meaningless to attribute human virtues or failings (loyalty, cowardice etc) to animals. They have evolved to exhibit behaviour that maximises their chance of surviving. For buffalo, using their size and number to chase lions away does that. I know you weren't commenting on lions, but for lions, running away from a herd of aggressive buffalo also does that, with the proviso that they have to kill eventually to eat. As the video shows, for buffalo they do that by isolating a weaker/smaller individual, then try to kill it before the others chase them off. It's a stunning video, anyway.

@@mkilpatr03 Huh? Animals do have loyalty have you even had a dog? Humans are animals after all and all our traits are evolved from lower animals so yes animals can be fearful and overcome their fear (bravery) like many buffalos who approached the lions knowing the danger but went anyways. Now adding a rational thinking component to reflect on that behavior is a different story.

@Smoke Stack That’s such a stupid idea. The vast majority of animal species’ individuals care for the members of their group, the exception to this norm is of animals who don’t. If you actually think you can reduce animal behaviour to some sort of individual automatism you’ll be shocked when you find out all (literally) of our biological senses and emotions, those of communion/community included (like empathy, or courage, even virtue) come from them. We are animals, and there’s no reason to completely delink ourselves from this fact, or to blatantly classify all other animal species as equally stupid. There’s clearly a lot of knowledge on animal behaviour and biology you have to look into. There is no “easy answer”, read a book.

There have been hundreds of men and women over the years that have made a conscious decision to sacrifice their life for the greater good or for other humans to live.

This is a really dramatic slice of life... a roller coaster of emotions and feelings. I say both because of the subtle difference in meaning a shrink would claim. Another point or two spring to mind regarding how predators keep herbivores moving so they are unlikely to over graze an area and cause desertification...The recent reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone park did just that ...200 moose/buffalo/ elk /deer on the loose without wolves nipping at their heels would munch an area down to the bare grit...but the tiny wind blown seeds of birch /aspen/willow/ alder etc get crucial time and space for establishing into seedlings into saplings The native tree cover bounced back like a whores draws and toilet doors when the plagues in town. There's that radical ecologists successively implemented concept to save exhausted long barren land by mimicking this very widespread and naturally occurring yet counter intuitive and only recently understood phenomenon. To get all the proper effects using domestic livestock the farmer takes up the role of the sadly missing predators a flash mob of hundreds of livestock ( a mixture of cattle sheep goats pigs donkeys horses even chickens ducks turkeys ! are driven at close on stampede pace ...all day ! every night for 2 weeks the mob herd is crowded up and fenced behind 2m high fabric predator proof fence on a roll... each day a new section of land is tore up by different hooves...pissed on....pooped on...the trails of broken up earth and a concentration of turds and wee attract invertebrates which attracts fruit and berry eating birds .. the process kickstarts the ecosystems in a similar cascading way as caused the historical cascade of collapse . After 2 weeks the super enriched overnighting say central pen is churned up and turned over where pigs have scoffed on perennial rooted weeds...a community vegetable garden has almost made itself. The process is repeated..moved along with a new central night rolled out predator proof pen. Large areas of the driest most degraded desertified broken and eroded land is being restored as we speak ...his name escapes me...he is just a quick Google or a gargle away. Dirt poor land owners or occupiers cooperation is very necessary but mostly forthcoming once it's proven to restore bio diversity and vegetation,rising water tables and everyone gets a richer more food secure community. The controversy is The shocker that with an almost anal discipline even the goat sometimes called " the desert maker" makes a useful contribution to the restoration of a lush ecosystem packed with a full range of flora and fauna. By closely following how the predator and prey dynamic works in a wild system an almost magical regeneration of ecosystems that are close to the original healthy state of land prior to when farming started a process of degradation...back when we walked gracefully upon the land ...back when we were freer more healthy were fiercely egalitarian...when we gathered and we hunted. This restoration and rewilding at least leaves the door ajar to some form of enlightened future primitivism... Although That might be just my utopian vision wound giving me a bit o jip!!! TOO LONG I KMOW..!!! They came to us in bits...they left in one peace ...hey I like that ending !!
