Why are up in arms over a 3rd round pick for Hendon Hooker? You know how many 3rd round picks don’t even get used and just get traded at the deadline, or end up as depth pieces and not starters because GMs are evaluating fewer and fewer 1st round grades on prospects. Hooker will probably never take a snap here, but I like that we got someone with a good deep ball, good size and good athleticism as a back up to Goff. Goff is the guy, I feel better about having Hooker behind him than Nate Sudfeld… that’s for sure. If that cost a 3rd round pick than oh well

I love how people can sit there and say Goff isn’t a good Qb. The only reason he’s doing anything is because of the talent around him. I mean it is a team fucking game. The dude can play ball. He’s smart. He doesn’t make many mistakes. He’s great in play action. He loves this team and more importantly loves this city. Goff is happy to be here. Why shit on him? We have a guy that wants to bring us a championship. He wants to do it for the city of Detroit. He has experience in the playoffs. Look at the guarantee money not the overall contract if 212 mil. 170 over 4 yrs with the potential earn 212 with incentives. 4 yr at 170 mil is 42 mil and even that money is going to be tax.

I think Hendon Hooker’s arc is what slowed this deal. Let’s remember Goff is NOT GOOD without a good OL. Many QB’s would thrive in Detroit. Kirk Cousins could be MVP. Hooker looks GOOD. Here’s why this was good for Detroit: keep everyone happy, let Hooker develop, if he’s the real deal you extend him in two years, trade Goff for multiple firsts to a team in need of a QB, spread the money to Gibbs, J Will, LaPorta, keep the OL top 5, and let Hook loose.

If you lop off the 13.6% increase in the cap, his contract is equivalent to $46M last year. This is a QB that can win us a ring on a discount(as long as Ben stays). Those savings can be used to extend Hutch, LaPorta, Alim, AND splurge on a couple FA's if needed. Ben leaving is our potential kryptonite but maybe a front loaded contract helps hedge against the possibility.

At 10:33 "If Brad Holmes thought he was worth 40 he wouldn't have paid 53". So it was previously stated that they weren't close to a deal. Either Goff was asking for more and Holmes talked him down or Holmes was trying to pay him less and Goff talked him up. I highly doubt Goff was asking for more than 53/year. Goff won this negotiation and Holmes lost, but at least the fans are happy and the culture is preserved.

From a standpoint of age, regardless of how next season goes, even if he has an awful year, he's still under 30, he's about the same age as Patrick mahomes. So, he has a great chance of leading the lions to a super bowl, my guess would be he would be around longer than 4 years, he won't even be 35. So, I think he could still have arguably 8 good highly productive seasons left. I mean, my question would be if the lions believe Jared Goff to be the guy at qb, and obviously the answer is yes, then, why not sign him to a 6 or 8 year deal? What's the difference? If you're willing to pay him 54 million a year, why not extend it for 6 or 8 years, then Goff would be closer to the end of his career. But, obviously, as far as qbs, this is the going rate, you have to pay, you have to be willing to spend money.
