Kurt, I learned more in this 30 minute video than 15 years of watching Terry, Howie and Jimmy. 😂

Great stuff Kurt. I like how you showed all of the points where game winning plays were there to be made and little things cost them, just so people can reply with KiCk tHe FiElD GoAlS.

Exactly. Did people watch the video at all or are they just here to give their coaching hot takes?

I definitely agree with you, Kurt. The Lions should've kicked a field goal on the first 4th & 2 play in the 3rd Quarter in my opinion.

@16m is actually a great example of a nice coverage mix by Wilks. This is what he needs to mix in more. It's a Cover 5 Match - what I like to call an inverted Tampa 5 - with the Deep Safety coming up into the hole and 2 DBs racing back in their Deep halfs -- the CBs are playing Cloud technique so that 5 guys are linked together in their Cover Shell - similar to C7, but with 5 guys instead of 7. I've seen this off and on from Wilks this year - again - if he has a gameplan of mixing these kind of coverages w/ surprise blitzes (not just relying on his front 4 - but using some of his speedy rushers to spy mahomes) then I think the niners have a shot. They will give up some big plays, but they need to get those big plays of their own on D - that's the key - and you get that from Aggressive Variety - not Passive Similarity.

Another case of the coach not knowing how to play football. Kick the damn field goal.

@7m is a great example of the faulty Wilks DScheme. In classic Quarters coverage (a match style coverage), the CB needs to stay on the hook as there is a defender already in the flat. The safety absolutely has the Seam route. You can see Warner's assignment is not to robot the RB down the seam - his technique is to leverage any crossing routes, then match in his short zone. I'm not sure how Wilks is running his Quarters, but it looks convoluted. The 2 safeties are leveraging for deep crossers but don't seem to be protecting their quarter of the deep zone. This is not usually how Qtrs is done. There are variations in all coverages, but I'm not sure what Wilks is teaching these guys and it doesn't seem sound. There's been a lot of talk about what wins or loses this SB, but I think the most devestating matchup may be the DCs... Spags is head and shoulders better than Wilks. Wilks has been around the block and is a good coach, but he is going to need to surprise me w/ a better gameplan and schemes than he's showed in his time as DC.

two words, “field goals “ period, They actually were playing really good getting that end of game touchdown drive. They were the more talented physical team that day, but not the smarter and it killed them

@10m another good example. The end result looks like a standard Tampa 2 that teams rarely run anymore. There are variations of Tampa now - T5, T7, for example. Even T2 match -- but there needs to be some zone match coverage in tight at the Goaline. Either this is a mistake by Warner or by the LB over Reynolds or just an easily beaten coverage scheme in this situation in the modern pass game. IF it's just a Cover 7 (a zone match w/ all 7 defenders linked on a string depending on the route distribution) then Warner would have Reynolds in the middle and pass off the seam to the S. IF its a Tampa 7 - then Warner is correct in the deep middle and the slot LB has to match on Reynolds. Who knows - unless your in the room with Wilks - but this is a mess on Defense vs a good route design, but nothing special or unusual. 49ers are lucky to be in the SB and will need to play better. Good news for them - they can play better - but Wilks needs to be better as well.

I think Kurt's TV and Radio contracts are way bigger than coaching. It's not a knock on Kurt, I'm his biggest fan too. But with his content, it can reach way higher audience too.

Constructive criticism . Let the play run for the first time once before starting to break it down.

Honestly, I think it works better this way. He's trying to teach young QB's, and letting the play start then stop is a "what do you see?" moment.

Half the time I lose you since you mention plays or formations that you have not identified. Try to reference a diagram whenever you describe a play or situation. Better and more careful drawing would help. Otherwise I love the knowledge.

Sometimes the clues aren't visible & human beings enjoy evolving Pigeon Superstitions. We do what you said in order to convince ourselves there's some logic there. Aside from the Panthers game I don't remember the Lions being dominant two _halves_ let alone 4 quarters all season. I don't have a_clue_ as to why though, but I'm that rare person who *doesn't* like to forward conjecture to the status of fact or anything above observation.
