Lionsteel M390 edge retention testing. I've done a few of these already and I had no idea this was coming to test. Thanks to Mike likes knives on Instagram for sending this one. So will this one disappoint or is it a rare onw that does well? Take a look and find out.

really used to like Lionsteel and Moletta designs,have not bought a Lionsteel product since their dismissive attitude towards the edge ret. tests done by our YT favorite edge testers,pretty disrespectful honestly,we are the community that actually makes their business possible.

You would think Lionsteel knew better than to sell such crap and not learning anything along the way. They should recall all the knives and apologise to their customers! Thank you for taking the time to test yet another one of these, G!

They must be kidding!! I really planned to get the Spyderco SpyOpera that is also made by Lionsteel, but this kind of blade performance would be utterly unacceptable.

This knife tested between 54 - 56 Rockwell. The first time I cut with this knife I knew something was wrong. The factory edge just fell apart. It really never got any better. This knife was tested 5 or 6 times. It wasn’t just one test.

I bet if you took the blade out and tested at the tang on Peter's ht... It would test 60hrc plus or minus 1hrc. There heat treatment protocol is the problem and they refuse to change it despite the performance being bad.
@mikelikesknives428
@mikelikesknives428 3 жыл бұрын
@@tacticalcenter8658 I am not sure what you mean when you say it will be 60hrc. Kurt tested 6 spots right next to the bolster. It was as far away from the cutting edge as he could get. I have removed the blade and tested it in 2 places on the the other side of the pivot screw. It was still a 56 - 56.5. I have to believe it just poor heat treating all the way around. I am sure the blade sharpening by belt probably took the cutting edge to the lower numbers. That knife has now been sharpened more than 12 times. We should be past a burnt edge by now. We are into just poorly heat treated and a seriously overheated blade all the way through.

@@mikelikesknives428 just saying the same thing happened with the first low hrc one tested. Low hrc by Kurt, along with the same poor edge retention in these tests. Then Kurt took that one to Peter's and it tested 60hrc at the tang. All I'm saying is, it was probably to spec but burnt to a crisp on a grinder after heat treat. They already have a poor heat treatment protocol. But the burning the edges makes it even worse.

No it’s actually a good little town I lived there for 3 years. They are just having issues with these super steels they have a history of making blades since before America existed. One thing you have to understand is they really don’t have the infrastructure and need to upgrade their process of tempering these new steels but they don’t suck at all. The town was only about 10k people when I lived there and there are a lot of good ppl who live there.

I have the Lion steel Dom. The design and size made for a wonderful pocket knife. I was so happy with it until it was time to sharpen. Using 1200 to 2000 grit diamond plates followed by crock sticks it has been impossible to get to a shaving edge. I get to a working edge and it does not hold that well.

I went to their video showing their hrc. I complained about my bestman 2's edge that was ruined in 2 days of light work. They said that all their knives are at 61 hrc minimum and that i can complain to Andra @ their shop/Website.... My s35vn Kizer even outperform this. Being rekt by a chinese mass production brand is a bit stupid, especially when using a steel like m390. It already should be at 63 hrc but even at 60 they ruin it for sure, the grain structure seem very uneven. Someone needs to break these in pieces to make sure XD

According to the bladeforums thread about there steels... They were open about its poor performance and said sleipner steel was better. Due to market pressure and less demand for sleipner they switched to the poor performance m390. Now they sell a lot more knives. It's all about marketing and popularity. They have people who don't even use knives buy these or people who don't care about what performance they come to. The market is really bad right now with so many ignorant people that just throw cash at them for the look or popularity.

The thing that I love about this video is he doesn't use any other knife to cut the same material so you have no idea what the quality of the cardboard is you have no idea if there was contaminants in the cardboard you have no idea how much pressure he was using how much speed he was using anything it's all based off of antidote evidence of one knife. RC is relative there's been several tests done on KZbin where they put things like s90 up against 1095 and there's no comparable difference whatsoever in cutting ability or edge longevity. people get hung up on this and act as if though it's some kind of major disadvantage or selling point for a pocket knife. The knife in question in this video I've owned for a while and I've yet to have a single issue with edge retention whatsoever it stays just as sharp just as long as my 20CV or other M390 blades. In the point that all these other videos that have shown RC really doesn't matter is the fact that none of us will ever get to the point that our knife is dull. Anyone who regularly carries a pocket knife will sharpen their knife way before it ever requires sharpening. It really doesn't matter about RC in a folding pocket knife because no one's going to be using their pocket knife for any hard use. This is all silliness much like everyone comparing knife lube. knife lube is only good until you stick it in your pocket and then at that point is contaminated and no longer benefits you in any on top of that the whole point of oil grease IE lubrication to reduce friction the opening and closing of a pocket knife doesn't generate any measurable amount of heat so it is not necessary. I have knives on bearings I have knives with lapped bronze phosphor washers and I have knives with absolutely no washers and I'll run them all bone dry and they are all equal across the board all the time in opening resistance and require no maintenance. The whole knife lubrication market is snake oil and nothing more. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2SyhHqiZq5rndE 17:15 if you don't care to watch the whole thing is where he gets into the findings.
