This is a good overview but it's probably worth noting that most phonemes aren't really necessary The basis of most lip sync is mouth open & mouth closed. Look at any puppet animation (e.g. The Muppets). We totally buy into the Muppets talking and all they have is mouth open and mouth closed. The problem with phonemes is that we tend to over analyze the mouth shape when doing lip sync animation. And that results in an over articulated and unnatural looking animation. Instead, start with mouth open and mouth closed. Then only add in the main shapes like E, O and M on top of the mouth open/closed animation. This is the basic technique we taught at the Digital Animation & Visual Effects School and it worked extremely well.

Heya! Thanks for the video! I have 2 questions: 1. When this process is complete, can i put in any audio file, and it will lip sync automatically? Or do i still have to animate or select each mouth movement for each word spoken? 2. After this process is complete, can i animate my character walking and it will continue the lip sync dialogue unaffected while he walks?

Love your tutorials. Is there any chance you could cover how to setup a mouth rig in a character with swappable mouth shapes? Something more like the red monster in the thumbnail of this video. I'd love to design a bunch of mouths and pop them on and off rather than a more traditional blend shape approach. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!

The base shapekey is automatically added when you add the first shapekey. And for all the other shapekeys, always put the value to 1 after creating them otherwise you can't edit anything. I know this comment is 2 years old, but maybe some people read through.
