"The most unusual" player, they say Maynard used to play something like this. These clips are FASCINATING.

I believe that Maynard was a downstream player, unlike Larry Wiehe. For upstream trumpet players take a look at Doc Severinsen, Jon Faddis, and Wynton Marsalis, for examples.

@@wilktone that’s not what I was getting at. The unfurled embouchure where the aperture extends all the way across the rim is what he talked about. You can do this with any angle just about.

@@trumpetman Horn angle doesn't make the embouchure go upstream or downstream, it's the ratio of upper to lower lip inside the mouthpiece. The size/length of the aperture depends on the range being played, it's much bigger/wider for the lower register. I'm not certain that Ferguson's aperture would have been so wide for the upper register that he was known for. Did anyone ever get him to play into a transparent mouthpiece to see what it looked like?

@@wilktone agreed, horn angle etc. Aperture size has little to do with angle. My dental structure/lip shape makes me a downstream player. Jim Manley did get him on a visualizer and talks about it in a video interview with I think K.O. at Stomvi. Lynn Nicholson talks about this in his “MF Protocol” as well.
