Woodwind - A Brass Perspective

I get asked why I don't feature more woodwind instruments on this channel. In this video I address this question and explain a little about the woodwind family from the perspective of a brass player.
It seems unbelievable that I have to explain this... But this video was uploaded on April 1st... It's an April fools joke...

Handy guide for watching this video: 1. Watch the video, enjoying the use of sarcasm, being aware that the uploader is not being serious as this was posted on April Fools Day. 2. Understand that both woodwind and brass have their own advantages and disadvantages, and that none are 'better' than the other. 3. AVOID THE COMMENT SECTION AT ALL COSTS!!! All the comments are about how [insert instrument or section here] are/is better than [insert instrument or section here], with an utter lack of self-awareness that makes me want to live in isolation on a mountain, estranged from human contact, for the rest of my miserable life. Thank you for reading and have a nice day, unless you're a string player.

SHE, because most woodwinds are girls. Not tryna say anything about girls, just saying that woodwinds dont have that smooth sound like brass. Question: how do you get an oboe/clarinet in tune? Answer: you throw it on the ground, jump on it, and use the remaining pieces to make a piano or brass instrument.

I’m confused... I thought all oboes had reeds, that’s what I expect a flute to look like. But yeah I though oboes had that little tiny reed not a blow over hold. (If I sound stupid please forgive me, I’m new to instruments, and I’m just doing my research before spending money) Edit: oh this is April fools. Just my luck. And here I was researching reed-less oboes. Thanks to the 8 billion jokes in the comment section, otherwise i would have honestly never known.

The recorder is from the flute family. It's the ancestor of the modern end-blown flute. All of the keyed woodwinds are the same as far as fingers go, so I can see how you might leave off the flute. Just don't though.

Every one of you are acting like 6 year old children, each instrument has it's own unique sound I play saxophone, bass and guitar and I enjoy everyone of those instruments so how about try and understand that each instrument is important in it's own way and which instruments sound better than others is very subjective to one's own opinion alright, I see the lack of brain cells but at least try to understand okay all of you.

Hilarious. That bit about reeds was spot on though. As an oboist, I believe my instrument has the most beautiful timbre of all, but obtaining/maintaining reeds is absolute hell. Were I to make a similarly sarcastic video about brass instruments, I would characterize them as mouth fart modulators, so obscene as to literally have "spit valves".

You are hilarious Trent! I have heard some really beautiful pieces played on woodwinds by accomplished musicians but agree that that the real music comes from the brass. I am playing trumpet in a small local orchestra and I commented just last week that the woodwinds, and even the strings, are only useful for creating a framework for hearing the trumpets. Thank you for a great channel. God bless.
