This song's immense audible beauty is overshadowed only by the horrifyingly macabre meaning behind its lyrics. I remember first listening to In Absentia, thinking this song was just a pleasing interlude; after studying its lyrics, I noticed its blatant allusion to necrophilia. Though, that stark contrast simply adds to its brilliance!

We have always loved this song, but the funny thing is we have a cat who was a kitten when we first used to play Deadwing and he still comes running into the room 7 years later anytime that we play Steven Wilson, especially anything from Deadwing.

Actually sorry to say it but this lyrics songs are actually pretty dark and brutal, as an Absentia song the concept inside the album is to "feel" and explain the crazyness and madness of some people by their visions, in this case, this talks about necrophile... Lips of ashes, because she is dead, connection failed because there is no response by the body and the next line "I drill, inside, inside, inside, inside", that Is pretty self explenatory. Yeah, pretty horrible isn't? :P As the other songs in that album, Strip the souls about killers and abuser, drown with me a man that drowns people, blackest eyes is about a psychopathic rapist and so on...

These echoes of darkness which inhabit us and which we deny, reminiscences of time immemorial where Lilith - before Eve - consoled Adam, voice of the splendid Nature that the proud bipeds despise unjustly, lyrical lament of organs abandoned in ruined chapels.. The unfolding of these melodies delivers us a moment from our chains and delights the soul by propelling it into dionysiac dens resplendent with chaos where the little devils laugh at the sour Reason who goes grumbling .. :-)

They're not-so-metaphoric lyrics about a necrophiliac serial killer who presumably kidnapped and killed a woman, then raped her corpse. The sheer description of the physical abuse on the body and the "romantic" worship of the victim's beauty seem to be intertwined in the lines.
