Prismatic cell question from very new solar person: I have already assembled a 280 Ah prismatic battery from 4 cells but not charged it yet. I have seen and read where prismatic cells will swell once charged. The busbars I connected were snug/tight. Can I remove the busbars to drill them wider so when they do expand, they will have some give/slack?

Are there any lifepo4 batteries that you can have more than 4.
@enigmascape7 ай бұрын
You mean more than 4 all in parallel? The main reason they all say 4 in parallel and 4 in series is because they are hard to keep in balance beyond that and the batteries in-between the 2 terminals used for the load are not used as hard and over time they get out of balance. It is recommended that if you wanted to add more than 4 batteries, that you upgrade the system to 2 strings of 4 ran in series and upgrade to 24v. But, you can mostly solve the balance problem by utilizing a set of large bus bars with equal length wires from each battery to the bus bar instead of connecting the batteries themselves together, but you need thick bus bars that could handle the amperage, or you can add an active battery balancer. Neither solution is ideal, and you may still need to manually re-balance your batteries on occasion, but ultimately you could probably hook up 8 batteries in a parallel string this way and be fine for 6mo to a year before needing to rebalance your batteries, maybe longer if the active balancer works well. Some of the cheap ones are prone to failure relatively quickly, and the good ones are expensive.

Would be very interested in seeing the real-world applications. I am currently trying to figure out how to run something for a backup or alternate power source (not wanting to use a gas generator) for the 2 things that I have that are most susceptible to a power outage, those being the refrigerator/freezer and small chest freezer. Past experience taught me that having enough power to run them for just a couple hours a day is enough to keep the food cold/frozen, as long as not opening the doors every 2 minutes. I currently rent, so really can't do a full-blown system. Maybe seeing how you have things set up and using it will give me some ideas on what I can do. Thank you for your videos!

Yea, I really want to get to more of that practical stuff soon, but I have just been weighed down by the demand for review videos, and they are kind of hard to pass up if you know what I mean. But it has taken me a little off-track of the main purpose of the channel. Part of the problem is, I got married last month and took a week off, and I got hit up by a bunch of companies all at the same time and I agreed to everything, and I got burried in stuff to review when I got home and have been kinda trying to play catchup now. It's actually been a godsend tho because I have been specifically choosing products that I think will be perfect solutions to various situations for future videos. Your need is a pretty common one. Can you tell me if you are ina climate where it freezes? And, will you be able to have any amount of solar, or are you just wanting a battery backup type of system that you keep charged off the grid? I'd kinda like to start doing a bit of livestreaming where I can do some Q&A type stuff soon, but just don't feel like my following is big enough to really make that work just yet. But soon I hope. Maybe when I hit about 2k subscribers. I think it would be fun to throw some idea out there and bonce it around with people. I'm an introvert, and horribly camera shy tho. This whole KZbin channel is sort of personal exercise in getting outside my comfort zone. I've tried to bring myself to do it for many years and finally just did it, and really glad I did. Doing livestreaming would be sorta 'next level' on that for me.

@enigmascape Congratulations on getting married! I live in northeast Kansas right now, and where I rent is pretty open for most of the day for sunlight. I could do a couple of smaller temporary ground mount type panels on each side of the house I rent for maximum exposure. Something on a stand that can be moved or taken down easily if needed. I don't think my landlord will let me mount anything permanent. I would charge the battery (or batteries) that way preferably. I would love to be able to run some things on solar as well as just being a backup, but again, with renting, my landlord probably won't let me hire someone (as I know he won't pay for it) to make the necessary changes/additions for the wiring to run anything by solar. And I don't have any idea of what kind of permits would be needed for that, if any. At least with a backup type system, if/when the power goes out I could plug directly into that without modifying the wiring in the house (I think/I hope). Come to think of it, I do have a couple of small rock tumblers, and I use a hot plate on occasion for recovering metals from e-scrap, and a mini-fridge, in the shed that I could run off solar/battery alone. Well the tumblers and the hot plate at least, not sure about the mini-fridge. It does get below freezing on occasion during the winter, but not for a lot of days typically. A live stream would be interesting, but potentially difficult depending on where people are and what kind of shifts they have if they work. I don't have a set shift, so my shifts vary from day to day and week to week. I currently work in retail and some of the shifts I work are 6 to 3, 7 to 3, 7 to 4, 9 to 6, 10 to 6, and 1 to 9 or 10pm. I get alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays and every other weekend off. So as far as a live stream, I couldn't say if I could make it or not, unless I know 3 weeks in advance and request that day off or request to switch shifts with someone so I could make it for the stream. Anyway, I will cross that bridge when the time comes. Looking forward to your next videos (it's a good sign that companies are asking you to review their products!).

Get yourself a kilowatt meter and plug them in for a couple days. You will have your answer on how much capacity you need. You are not looking to test batteries. You are looking for a power study of your own usage.

My biggest complaint about buying high Ah batteries is that their BMS max amps are always too low. They should be at least 100 amps per 100 Ah. This batteries have done it!
@enigmascape7 ай бұрын
I agree... I bought a couple of 24v 100ah batteries about a year ago that only had 100a BMS in them because a year ago anything with a 200a bms was quite a bit more money then. I really have buyers remorse about that, but at least I have 2 in parallel so that's the only reason I did it. I think more and more companies now offer these PLUS ones, and for not much more. I'm guessing they use this "PLUS" terminology because many people don't know why they should want 200a, idk.

@@enigmascape I had to go with four 12.8v 100Ah and buy four of them to build my 400AH boat house battery bank to get enough amps to be able to start the engine in case of a starter battery failure. It added a lot more work to have 4. I wish these had been out then.
