Casagrande Cup Method
Minimum water content at which a part of soil is cut by grove of standard dimension flows together a distance of 12 mm under the impact of 25 number of blows.
Procedure
About 120gm of specimen passing through 425μ sieve is mixed thoroughly with distilled water in the evaporation dish.
A portion of paste is placed in the cup over the spot where the cup rests on the base.
Squeezed down and spread into position and the groove is cut in the soil pat.
Handle is rotated at a rate about two revolution per second.
The number of blows are counted until the two parts of soil sample came into contact at the bottom of the groove along the distance of 10mm.
After recording numbers of blows approximately 10gm of soil from the near the closed groove were taken for water content determination.
Since it is difficult to adjust the water content precisely equal to the liquid limit when the groove should closed in 25 blows the liquid limit is determined by plotting a graph between no of blows as abscissa on logarithmic scale and corresponding water content as ordinate.
