15 year painter here... That masking liquid is ONLY good for French doors(the doors in the video) where there is no frame or return. Smart move on the scoring... VERY VERY important. Still do it on the expensive frog tape we use

@Racing_Fox413Ай бұрын
Do you recommend scoring frog tape before removal? Been doing some painting today and will be applying a final coat and removing the tape tomorrow wouldn’t wanna mess it up lol
@nothingsimpostleble1593Ай бұрын
@adventure_F0x yes always... it's not necessarily about the bleed through. If what your taping to is actually smooth and clean where the tape won't lift, yoh shouldn't have to much trouble. It's when the paint bridges to the tape and the painted edge, when you go to peep the tape/damask, it will peel the paint because of the "bridging". It doesn't happen as much with frog tape but it does happen. It's really not the tapes fault. It's like you have to spray multiple coats for coverage, overall finish, so you have a pretty thick layer of paint.You have to score it first and be really really careful not to scratch or gouge the freshly painted surface...
@Racing_Fox413Ай бұрын

Fun fact: on historically correct glazed exterior sashes, the paint MUST go onto the glass a couple millimeters. With skill your paint line will be super straight and neat of course, but the paint on the glass itself is your first line of defense from water incursion. With no paint overlap, your sash will last half as long in the weather.

@robwoodring94375 күн бұрын
@olinelvgreen2062 lots of em! A product called Glazol is what you want for glazing a sash. Forget you ever heard of DAP. In case you need a filler for an outdoor project, you want PC Woody. A Festool Domino system will pay for itself on the first job you use it on. Your joints on that job will also outlive you, your client, and their grandkids. Speaking of longevity, endeavor to use rot-resistant woods (mahogany, osage, cypress, walnut etc) for outdoor jobs even if they're meant to be painted. It's insurance against spotty upkeep of the paint, which does happen even with funded & protected historical buildings. Titebond 2 is perfectly good for outdoor projects. There's no need to spend double on Titebond 3 unless you're building something that's to be submerged.

That's fine for interior doors, but for exterior, your paint is your seal. You WANT a small bead of paint on the glass. Otherwise, moisture will wick in behind and cause your paint to fail.
@-KIMISAFOXАй бұрын

I'm a contractor (if that matters) so I consider everything. Let me tell you all why this product is fairly useless. FYI, this product has been used in the art industry for like 70+ years. You can find little bottles of it at any arts and crafts store. Okay here we go ***Ace Ventura inhale*** Now you have one more thing that can spill, one more brush to clean, one more liquid to preserve, one more chemical to expose yourself to, you still have to scrape and the stuff ain't cheap. Google says it's $30/qt or like $80/gl. Maybe you don't use it a lot so you think it pays for itself over time. I doubt it keeps long enough, even if properly stored. You have to wait for it and the paint to dry before removal and time is money. Even if this product dries quickly, there's no way you can get an edge to pull it or do your scraping and not touch fresh paint. It's inevitable. Tape will ALWAYS be around, it's light, you don't have to wait for it to dry, you don't need a brush or additional tool, and clean up is literally just picking the roll up and throwing it back in your bag or whatever. Leave yourself pull tabs and as soon as you're done painting you can start pulling tape. Again, time is money so not having to wait out any dry time gets you to the next job or task much much faster. Tape also makes the glass visible so anyone that's not the painter can still tell there is something fragile under that taped off area. White is a common color and I can see over spraying being a problem and over spraying means money wasted. Tape and paper or plastic give you easily visible guidelines. I know this was a lot to read so sorry for being long winded but this took me about 10 seconds to think about. Anyways, very cool video for DIYers but it's a novelty at best on a real job site.

Tape is slower. As you can obviously see, painting the glass is about 2-3 times faster than taping the glass and peeling and scraping is the exact same amount of time. I learned to paint windows with a brush without using tape because it's faster to paint slightly slower and never deal with masking at all. This was before liquid masking was invented. They also make edge tools for panting trim so you don't have to deal with tape.
