Being a chemist and working in a lab, I can tell you from experience that it will not cause irreversible damage if it comes in contact with your skin for a quick period of time. Because the nitrogen is at 77 degree Kelvin, and you body temp is around 310 degree K, there is a large temp difference. This temp difference will cause the nitrogen to go into a gas but this gas that is around your skin also insulates you from the actual liquid nitrogen. Same thing with putting water on a hot grill.

It pretty much freezes anything it touches, but when nitrogen freezes "chemical freezing" its pretty much like in the cartoons where you can push someone over and they shatter like glass. So, in essence your throat, and stomach would be so cold that they actually started burning (dissolving)... then you'd die... :)

It's fine if it's on your skin for less than a second or so. If you're fast, you can even dip your hand into the liquid itself.

btw guys, dont breathe alot of it in... like breathing too much of any gas, you restrict the percentage of oxygen in the air, therefore can cause breathing problems and suffocation due to terrible diffusion in lungs

@88Vinay you will drown in it eventually, but it is like CO, in the way that it won't hurt. That is because when you hold your breathe or you are drowning, the pain in your lungs is from a excess of CO2. But it is safe to breathe in, just don't fill up the whole room with it and expect to stay there for a long time.

Though liquid nitrogen isnt as readily available, it is available if youre over 21. And Dry ice can be bought from a harris teeter.
@BLavins
@BLavins 12 жыл бұрын
-(Continued from above) Subtract 1,432 from 15,750 and get 14,318 liters of oxygen in the room. Which would lower the percentage of oxygen to (14318/75000) x 100 = roughly 19%. And that is a room with no ventilation.

He says, 'these are water molecules' but I don't think that's right. The water wouldn't turn to a gaseous state, if anything the water would freeze. The gas is nitrogen, being turned to a gas from a liquid due to the heat transferred from the water.

I'm guessing his is in Fahrenheit in which absolute zero is -459.67. but in his case it should be below -321 because that is the boiling point of Nitrogen(but he was probably just being approximate).
