We used to have water rocket competition in college for the longest flight time, most horizontal range etc. Besides fins we used to add small handmade parachutes made from some plastic wraps and threads for slow descent and some other gizmos like a pointed/cone shaped nose to the bottle for better stability and more control over direction. Achieved some really good flight times with those.

@D0ctorF0ster You mean the Leidenfrost effect, which would work if your face was flat. You can quickly dip your hand in LN2 or pour it over your hand. But you cannot hold it in your hand. Also I think the Leidenfrost effect doesn't work with wet surfaces such as eyes, the mouth or the nose. So you wouldn't get damage on your cheeks but you could get damage on your eyes or your lips if a drop of it gets stuck there.

Good illustration of reaction mass. This is why 95% of rocket mass is fuel. Just burning stuff in a rocket engine, illustrated by nitrogen just venting while the bottle is upright, is not going to cut it. Rocket engines need stuff to push against as illustrated by turning the bottle upside down.

For the bigger bottle, should use a completely cylindrical bottle with no handle. And add 3 or 4 fins to it for stability. Make sure it is weight balanced so it goes straight up. Then see how high you can make it go. Have a watcher stand at 50 feet away, or other given appropriate measured distance. Have them record the angle to the highest point of travel. Then use trigonometry to calculate the height.
