Another great video. Just wanted to thank you for all of your time and music in GWAR. You’re the best Brent.

Excellent work as usual . With you 100% on conservative bias . Too many knuckle heads thinking biasing "hot" is way to go .... its not. Another satisfying video .

Man, that thing sounds incredible. Great video.... Hey man, you ever play thru one of those bluguitar amp 1 pedals?. They sound pretty damn good for what they are, just wandered what you think of the build.

I an old school tester it does not do transconductance but does do leakage test between electrodes and one EL34 tung-sol shown to have leakage from cold and it went down when the valve heated up and after 10mins it crept back up again.

Shame about the GWAR gig. Real eye-opener on the financial state of professional touring musicians.

My tech happened to bias mine cold, and 5881 tubes, so it’s about 80w. But damn does it now sound pretty good. Mine had dead tube for years before I dug it out of the closet.

Nice! I try to keep all my Peaveys in the low to mid 30 mA's. I'm too scared to test plate voltage, so I just use bias probes and keep it on the cold-ish side. It's not the most scientific but it has served me pretty well and kept the maintenance costs down since I don't need a tech for every new pair of tubes.

Hey what brand /model tube tester is that? I’m interested in acquiring one. Also , always appreciate the videos and tutorials.

I recently opened up my 5150 block letter I bought a couple years ago…man oh man it had some stuff done to it…I recapped it and undid the previous work back to original. It seems to work and sound fine except that the power/standby led’s dim out and back on every 5 seconds on the dot…. Any guesses? lol

Check R70 and R71 with a heat gun and multimeter. One of them could be going bad or possibly C45 . The voltage should be constant on one side of R70 and R71. If it fluctuates on the other side then it's likely one of those components.

I have a 5150 signature head. Changed the tubes and sounded great for about 6 months, then one day while playing on it, it sounded like the volume cut in half. Happened a couple years back and now its just been sitting. Any idea what could have happened?
@purgasound Жыл бұрын
Could be a number of things. Could be an output tube or two went bad. The heater wires for the output tubes are on a ribbon cable and those can go bad at the snap-in quick connector, the preamp tubes are on a flexible PCB and the solder joints can crack...

Could you tell me what tube-tester you are using? I am considering getting myself a uTracer 6+, would be nice to get a reading on all the spare tubes pulled from amps over the years.
@purgasound Жыл бұрын
Maximatcher II is my most frequently used one. It's good to have others as they all will have some limitations.

Hey my man, I recently bought a Peavy Block Letter 5150 2x12 combo for a great price....I want to see if I can convert it to a head without the speakers....I found a shell of a 5150 head for it, what would that run me if I sent it to you?
@purgasound Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how long that would take. The chassis for the combo is setup very different from the head so it won't directly fit the footprint of a standard headshell. It might be a better option to cut the combo apart into a head and cab. I would have to have them both in front of me to see what options are available. You can message me at brent@purgasound.com
@ivanzivanovic4013 Жыл бұрын
Yeah agreed with the man himself. I had a 6505+ combo. I kept trying to fit it into a shell. It’s now just cut. I found by dimensions it will fit into a JCA100H head shell. I have both lol, and I really need to test it.
@ivanzivanovic4013 Жыл бұрын
And by the way, if you have any skill or desire, with a circular saw or a good long hand saw, you can do this on your own. Just be super careful when exiting the chassis and pay attention to your hands and the inside of the amp chassis. Keep hands out…! Or at least one hand away.
