If you like flat acrylic paint try the Holbein flat! They’re a bit pricey but they are awesome to work with

You can manipulate the glossiness with a medium. Matt retarder or maybe use matt flow improver for airbrushes? Some also just buy a matt, protective spray or even a set of liquid matt, satin & gloss finish. They can then paint it onto their creation and manipulate glosiness at will... like shiny water or blood but matt painting in general?

Jen - you always make me want to try new painting materials! 🤩 i love the thorough review about the paint texture and all of the tips you share about it. I also paint indoors at home, so air quality is really important for me as well. You painted so may pretty things with this paint! How do these compare to the posca markers? What is your favourite medium to paint with right now?

I’ve been on the hunt for art materials that I resonate with the past few months and I’ve found three items that I really like to paint with, but in slightly different ways. The Posca Pens of course make that list, I like them for doodling and cute paintings in my sketch book, they can also be used on a lot of materials but I don’t have much experience with that. For these Liquitex paints I was specifically looking for something for painting on canvas that offered larger quantities to upgrade to. My last fav art supply is traditional high quality qouache. There is just something so soothing and magical about watching the paint slide across the paper. I can’t say I have one absolute favorite out of them though! But I do suggest when buying a new art product to just buy a few rather than the whole set just in case you don’t end up liking them!

Golden SoFlats may be the perfect matte acrylics you are looking for. They behave more like what I expect from paints…the Liquitex soft body paint feels more gel-like, shows brush strokes, and can be tough to apply evenly…it applies “splotchy”. SoFlats are none of these things, they don’t show brushstrokes, they behave more like a traditional paint, and they are self-leveling, so they apply evenly. You can also buy 38-400 flip caps for them so you can squeeze the paint out, dropper style, if you don’t like the screw tops.

I’ve looked at them but I’ve heard they have a strong odor and I’m sensitive to smells, have you noticed a strong chemical smell to them?

I’m sensitive in the sense I can easily detect odors. They have a slight detectable odor, far less than the semi-sweet smell of Liquitex soft body paints. I would say the smell is not noxious or unpleasant. I have not noticed any particular color smelling differently than another (I have and use the entire range). I’d strongly recommend buying some primaries and B&W to evaluate them.

@@JenFetzer Heads up, if you live near a Blick Art store, they are having a massive sale on some paints in-store, including Golden’s SoFlat line. It’s gonna last for about a month, so now might be a good time to check it out. Personally, I checked it out about a year ago and ended up getting every color in the line.
