Hi there, Liron here!
And today I want to talk to you about what I perceive to be one of the hardest watercolor painting techniques - blending and edge control!
Funny enough, this is also a very basic technique that I recommend mastering early on. It's an important pillar of watercolor painting.

06:39 - Blending different colors

You enjoy the sound of rain?! I guess it must not rain much in Israel? :) Try living in Ireland, where it rains every day and let me know how you feel about the rain then. :P Really informative video, Liron. :)

Haha, I’ll admit we don’t get much rain here, and it seems the winters become shorter and shorter with every year that goes 😛 I hope to visit there one day!

I think we have the opposite problem. It seems Irish winters are getting longer and longer with each passing year! It is March and there is still ice and snow on the ground! You would be most welcome to visit if you can manage the rain. :) Did you ever get the email I sent you about Schmincke paints?

I think it’s really important that you take your time. I know most people want quick videos, but that doesn’t help those of us who are learning. So the long explanations are necessary, very important and I’m very grateful. I’m definitely new, but try every day for showing depth, blending and of course making objects look shiny. This is my constant practice. Thank you for the videos

It is very clear for how you control the amount of water, I really need this, many videos they just apply color but they do not really show how much water they are using and is there paint on the brush, I think it is very important to a totally beginner like me. Thank you very much and now I am doing this training all the time and trying to make my circles to have as smooth as transition as possible.

We've been told to stay home in Canada (Covid-19 social distancing), so I decided to buy some water colours so I had something to do. Just wanted to say that your tutorials are so helpful because they show things like how to use the brush - not just a "this is how you paint a flower". So I've been painting for just over a week. Not saying I'm that good. But improving and and proud of what things are starting to look like. Although my chicken attempt was not that great, each flower I do focusing on brush stroke, not a painting "recipe" seems to be getting better. So ...thank you. Nice videos. Good instruction. Hope you're all safe in Israel.

Thank you Liron for making this so understandable. As someone new to watercolor everything seems a little daunting. The way you showed this process makes it so much more attainable. We just need to practice practice and then practice some more. I found your explanation of the way you dried your brush in-between each application of paint a light bulb moment for me. Just those little things of how much water to use or take away is fantastic.Take care.

Like this video! I’m pretty new and all this water control is fundamental. I struggled with hard lines for a while and ended up overworking it to “salvage” it (people like to say watercolouring is forgiving) so I was real frustrated. Now I realize it’s the paper quality and control of wetness of brush. Very helpful. Thanks!

I’ve already mentioned that I’ve been doing a course using wet in wet. The instructor provides templates, and I use them just to save time. What he’s doing is adding small puddles of water, and then he starts the painting with wet on dry and touches into the puddles. I kind of figured it out, but had a hard time following, and I think part of the problem is the amount of paint vs water, but he never really talks about that when he’s doing the demo. I end up with areas that are too wet or too dry. Meanwhile, I’m watching him blend everything together beautifully! I can’t believe he’s labeling these a “beginner” courses. We started with some very basic leaves, and only used one color. I kind of got that. Then he moved to a couple of trout, and that required 2 colors, lots of wet and dry manipulation, blending colors, etc. I managed to kind of get it, but I did not have fun!
@LironYan
@LironYan 3 жыл бұрын
Haha sounds complex indeed! I often do it the same way - wetting an area, then painting while touching it to get a blended transition. You can actually see the technique in this other vid I did: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGbPnYGIf9SFZpI (I already link to the relevant time in the vid) Let me know if this helps simplifying it a bit. I should probably do another example of this in the future (: This has a lot more nuances to it, you can pre-wet a certain area and use it to create a varied edge - sometimes hard and sometimes soft.
@annewatman677
@annewatman677 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I’m going to watch what you’re doing, and I’d love it if you did more on this. The results really are impressive, but it IS complex! I would get parts of it, but then my paint would get too dry in some areas, and I had a hard time keeping track of everything. You are so nice to respond because I’m kind of lost right now. I want to do watercolor, and I really don’t know where to start. If I was following your beginner videos, where would you have someone start? I’ve actually done a fair amount of watercolor, but I’d happily go back to the beginning and learn more about technique.

It's so good. This almost a science of Watercolor painting. Did my head in a bit though; because I'm used to painting from light to dark and a technique here is from dark to light.
@LironYan

Thank you 🙏😊 Don't force any of these techniques. It's enough to understand them and be able to use them to very basic extent. The rest will happen while painting, based on instinct (: As for painting dark to light, this is more of shape manipulation. Perhaps looking at it this way will help you better understand it

I'm just a few months into watercolor painting and I found your channel. I really like your style and method of teaching. I've watched several of your videos and am just now getting around to commenting. Keep it up! I'm planning to purchase your drawing course. I'm 57 and I used to draw a good bit when I was a teenager and in my early 20s, but too many dumb life decisions in my younger days slowed down my progress and I want to get back into it. Thanks again!

"Well I Love a rainy night" - the late Eddie Rabbitt. :-) Hey, I suggest watching 'Mind of Watercolor' recent video on paper. Very convincing that paper is hugely important with respect to blending and mixing.

Watched it - it’s such a great comparison video that really shows the problems of using different types of pulp paper 🎨😁 I’ve been saying for a while that you can probably skimp on brushes and even paints, but paper is really important

The circular green example #3 is just perfect. Very instructive lesson. I am watching this 5 years onward in almost mid April and guess what, second time to ay that a shower of hail is going down. 😒

I'm glad that I watched clear to the end. I think I've mastered wet on wet after years of doing it that way... but this really taught me the difference of blending using wet on dry, and I found it VERY helpful. I've been enjoying all your videos. Thank you.

I really liked how you described the process for blending, You showed me what I was doing wrong (and couldn't figure it out myself) Now I know how to practice properly. Thank you for making this very informative video. IMHO Please don't apologize for talking about basic techniques, there are many people just learning to paint and find these tips extremely helpful. Thank you again. Have a wonderful day :)
