At 4:43 you pass the abandoned Woodhaven Junction station, which really needs to reopen along with the Rockaway Beach Branch.

I've been looking for a picture of that station for ages. I didn't see any trace of where the Rockaway Beach Branch connected with the Atlantic Branch. I thought it was before you reached the Woodhaven Junction Station on the way to Brooklyn. And yes, the Rockaway Beach Branch should be reopened to give travelers from the Rockaways a decent trip to Penn Station and Atlantic Terminal.

+Cats01 I did a google search of where the Atlantic Ave trains branch off to the Rockaway and its after Woodhaven. Traces can seen actually on Atlantic Ave. and SE corner of 98St. a lot of school buses occupy it. You can tell by a wall that is characteristic of the LIRR construction style of the 1940s

+Cats01 type in Woodhaven junction or Old Rockaway LIRR. You will see pics of old MP54s climbing out the ramp fr Atlantic Ave.

2m55s in you see the old Dunton Tower. I worked it as a Block Operator many years ago. I really enjoyed it even though it was a small tower. Plus Jay would call and tease you if you used the radio!!!

My mistake. If you stop the tape at about 4:54, you get just a glimpse off open space where the two branches joined. If you look to the left, you'll see what appears to be the start of the empty trackway that was part of the connection to the Rockaway Beach Branch. I wish someone had done, or would do, an RFW tape FROM East New York, TO Jamaica to get a better view.

Wish you guys could get some on the diesels on the port Jeff branch.. when I was a kid I had a teacher make me write a letter to the rail road. I asked for a ride, they said the normally don’t allow it because of insurance reasons but they did it for me.. I rode an old Gp-38 from PJ to Huntington and back.. was pretty awesome. Long enough time has gone by I think it’s safe to say they let me do alittle operation. Was a dream come true as a 10 year old boy. I also use to hang out around the PJ yard and the guys would let me climb up and hang out in the engines while they did there thing

Another excellent video. Loved the "spark" thrown off by the train ahead at about 1:00 into the video. Great seeing what looks to be a platform at about 4:45 - I assume it is an abandoned station. This tunnel looks totally different than from Nostrand Ave to Flatbush Ave, which looks more like regular tracks that happened to be covered over. East New York station - always seemed "scary" to me - above ground, yet not quite in the daylight! Finally I can see all that I missed by never having a front window view the few times I rode this train. I don't know if the author of the video still checks in, but if you do - have you ever filmed Metro North in the Park Avenue tunnel? Only a couple of miles, but it is quite a sight to behold - in particular the two track levels into GCT. Another trip I loved, which was always elusive, and now is entirely gone - LIRR from LI City to Jamaica. No front window because they were coaches pulled by a diesel engine. Wish I had been able to go to NYC more often - would have loved to done more on the LIRR. I was limited to only the "city terminal" routes and Great Neck.

Looking at 4:42 to 4:50 at old Woodhaven station on the right. Even with this front window view, it flashes by too fast to really see it. I know a website that has a few pictures, though God knows how they got in there.

According to diagrams I've seen, Rockaway Beach trains from Brooklyn would have turned right BEFORE the Woodhaven station. It would have allowed trains from/to Rockaway Beach to join the Atlantic Branch. There's not even a hint in the tunnel of where that cut-off was.
@samuelitooooo
@samuelitooooo 5 жыл бұрын
There is actually; more easily seen from the Jamaica-bound track. You can't see the cutout itself in this video because of the camera angle and the columns; however you'll see gaps in these columns shortly after Woodhaven station, indicating that Brooklyn-bound trains crossed over the Jamaica-bound tracks after entering the portal.

Things will be different when the Atlantic Shuttle opens. It will be on a brand new platform and using different tracks up to the tunnel, and who knows whether they'll keep M3s on that line (especially as M9s are coming in)

I've had a few situations before and I won't take no for an answer anymore.. The Public is permitted to film onboard trains, as long as you do nothing suspicous. The Railroad has no problem with that. On top of that, it's perfectly legal to video out the front of M1s (retired) and M3s, as long as it doesn't detract the Engineer or Conductor and it puts no one at risk. On the flip side, because of this "technology", there's many things Engineers used to do for passengers in the Past that we cannot do today.

MrMaster767 As a child back in the early 1980's I got to honk horns at grade crossings and even throttle up the train once on the Long Beach branch line. Don't think you'll ever see that happening again.

I'm with you, Nicky D. Maybe it's the very loud sound of being in that tunnel. It always feels like it is way too fast for the track condition. The tunnel to Penn Station doesn't feel that way. The track in the tunnel to Atlantic Ave.really needs to be made more continuous rail, appears to have so many joints.
