True, but a notification banner of an incoming message could've popped up while she was trying to get WiFi on the phone. In that case there's no need to open the messages app to see what's in the incoming text. If an obviously suspicious text pops up like that, most people can't fight the urge to check out the rest of the messages. Not saying this necessarily happened with her, she might as well just used the 'looking for WiFi' as an excuse to snoop around on his phone. But it's a possibility.
