Lisa della Casa sings "Mi tradi"

Lisa is one of my favorites of all time. She has a voice with a youthful flourish and warmth with an aristocratic shimmer. Having sung almost the same repertoire as Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, I do feel astonished at the high minded opera world's apparent consensus that Schwarzkopf somehow is the finer singer.

Incomparable! Della Casa maintains the legato and silver tone through all the trials and tribulations of this difficult aria. She is a completely sympathetic and moving Elivra....fiercely determined and yet full of pathos and vulnerability. Della Casa set the standard for singing Mozart for a generation...and all time. Brava!

One of the great opera films, IMO with Della Casa in superb form. I am so fortunate to have a DVD of this performance & my only regret is that Leopold Simoneau is not present here as Don Ottavio even though Anton Dermota, a fine singer, does a respectable job. Simoneau was along with Cesare Valletti perhaps the best tenors at this time for this role. The entire cast here is one to cherish here: Siepi, Edelmann, Berger, Berry, Grummer, & Ernster all in top form. Fortunately this DVD is still available, I believe, to purchase & I recommend doing so for after nearly 70 years it remains a classic.

She and L. Price are the only singers who make this nearly impossible aria sound somewhat easy. I am falling in LOVE with Della Casa's sound. I don't think I've ever heard this singer strain a single note in any role. She only sang the music that suited her and her voice just always seems in full bloom. Brava.

The best Donna Elvira alongside with Schwarzkopf. I love the deignity and innocence she gives to the role, despite she being very aware of Don Giovanni's bad character. Della Casa's voice flows perfectly, she copes with the embellishments without any flaw. And the timbre is the most feminine and regal of all! Oh, and she's also extremely beautiful.

Lisa Della Casa has one of the most beautiful soprano voices I've ever heard. (I can only dream, let only hope or expect, to have or develop such a voice) Silvery, crystal clear, totally feminine, no heaviness, but still warm. She truly does shine in most, if not all, the roles she performed.

She definitely has the beauty of voice over Schnwarzkopf. We have been fortunate to have such wonderful lyric sopranos grace the stage and amongst them, Della Casa, Schwarzkopf, De Los Angeles, Caballe, Te Kanawa, Zylis Gara, Fleming and Isokoski are stand outs.

Lisa Della Casa died today. I shall especially remember her for her Countess in Erich Kleiber's The Marriage of Figaro, perhaps the greatest recording ever made.

Lisa dela Casa started her career in theater. She has drama, voice and beauty. If Da Ponte had lived to meet her, he would have changed his script... Elvira and Don Giovanni would have lived happily together ever after

Why is everyone posting this aria as "Mi tradi.."? Isn't is "Mi tradita.."? This della Casa performance is lovely

Mr. Shackleford’s comment is from many years ago, but just in case...The title IS “Mi tradi” with an accent grave on the “i”making it the simple past (an action that started and finished in the past). Mi tradita would make no sense without a form of the verb “avere”. She COULD say “M’ha tradita”, as she does later in the aria, but what Da Ponte wrote, “Mi tradi”, is correct.

Quell'alma ingrata (= Don Giovanni) mi tradi. That ungrateful soul has betrayed me. I suppose the past verb form here must agree with the third person noun that is the subject (l'alma ingrata, i.e. Don Gio). Da Ponte's employs a poetic inverted form, placing the pronoun + verb first. Betrayed me has that ungrateful soul! : )

one or two pronunciation mistakes and I prefer my Elviras to have darker voices but her line is beautiful, flawless, perfectly controlled and far reaching, one of the best singer of her age, a good actress and beautiful too

Lisa della Casa was perfect for Mozart and for Richard Strauss. For my money, the only close at her time was Schwarzkopf, who was a tad better with Strauss. Della Casa was one of the most beautiful women in the world at her time.
