So true, put the problem down and come back with fresh eyes. Good advise for any intellectual problem. Lisa is a study in good psychology. I am so in awe of her attitude. I hope she finds the human grounding she needs at MIT.

this is an amazing interview. it is interesting in terms of getting some insight to the conway knot problem, which is the reason i initially watched this video - and then it is so refreshing and healing as well to hear such an open discussion about how difficult it is to meet all these expectations and as well to hear about the doubts, coming into a field that is supposedly dominated by a stereotype where one feels not to belong. even though the solution for the conway knot problem is such a good example, that diversity / different approaches are key! :) hopefully the doubts are passing and this is just a reminder for everyone who is watching, that many (successful) people have doubts too, which they shouldnt have

19:14 We are social creatures. We learn by intermittently being alone (for 40 days?), and coming together. While I was teaching, I kept repeating to myself a kind of mantra: "There are things, that I know, and they don't - something that I can teach them. There are things, that they know and I don't - maybe, they could teach me, but there is so much more, that no human being knows, and I have to let them know about it gently." I still keep fond memories of pupils stalking me at the gate. Is this something, this special feeling of passing the baton, gone forever?

It does not appear that anything is gone.. only lost to our perspective and appearance of “ time” and the position we remain as a means of measure.” What you described… is not lost on me. It’s not surprising either. This strange alignment is still annoying but getting better at accepting that the 4th dimension is a factor not one to measure or assume meaning Its just normal and it is precious when it “shows up” Like now Take care Jeremy

Lisa's approach to both mathematics and life is so refreshing! I love how she reframes challenges-whether in knot theory or in coping with stress-as opportunities to stay curious and avoid mental burnout. Her mix of humor and realism, like thinking of insomnia as 'boring,' is surprisingly relatable. It's inspiring to see someone who's focused on solving real, hard problems but still keeps things grounded and accessible. Thank you, Lisa and Jing, for such a thoughtful and engaging discussion! written with GPT!

Lisa, I am deeply impressed. Seeing this interview and your perspective on the field of math and hearing your understanding is incredibly inspiring. It is comforting knowing people as intelligent and human as you exist in this world which can seems. Watching your excitement and passion for math brings me such joy I thank you for your existence. Psychotomimetic substance therapy proves to be extremely helpful for accessing the next level of cognitive thought and behavior performance. Psychotomimetic substances are proven to have properties of hippocampal neurogenesis. I wish you best in your academic and personal life. You're a beacon of hope and wonder, thank you.

I love her honesty and preciseness when she admits the fields she likes and dislikes, and what she's good at or bad at. Also from her advice it's you can hear she's built a lot of wisdom and intuition to share. P.S. Lisa, if you're reading this - about the sleep anxiety and issues - try meditation / Yoga nidra :) Calming the mind is a priceless ability, probably moreso in something as cerebral as Mathematics. Also - I found this interview with Dr. Alia Crum about mindsets interesting kzbin.info/www/bejne/mne1kKp8g5dmkLs My takeaway for sleep was that your performance when tired can probably be enhanced by changing your mindset about it. And this may seem over-engineered, but the feedback loop: (being more OK with lack of sleep -> less anxiety -> more sleep -> more OK with lack of sleep) may help calming the "rational" anxiety. All the best!

I can't help but notice she is in a room in MIT's building 2. I've probably walked through that hallway quite a few times! Looking at things from a different perspective is important. Thanks for this interview.

Are there applications of her work to physics? 😁Would be super interesting. Maybe string theory? I know that higher dimensional strings can form into knots and maybe represent a particle or something.

This is a really good example of what happens when your interviewer is noticeably less intelligent than the interviewee. Conversation is a two part thing and does not work if one party does not comprehend the other. Jin Wang you missed out on being a stellar interviewer, I mean you tried your best but if you didn't understand something why couldn't you ask for more of an explanation of the specific word or name of concept that you didn't understand instead of simply moving on like you did. Also when your guest is being extremely intelligent like Lisa is over her and you aren't comprehending her you should politely compliment her ability to do that instead of staring blankly in silence. Encourage your guest to continue talking and get excited with them. Make them feel safe and comfortable to express themselves. I don't mean to criticize you too terribly its more just a courtesy, a piece of valuable information. Please have a good day, and enjoy your life. Good fortune to all.

I wouldn't say less intelligent, but less knowledgeable for sure. She can reasonably assume that if she doesn't get it, much of the audience may not as well. So asking for clarification helps the overall interview without the need to cast aspersions on the intelligence of the interviewer.

Couldn't disagree more. This is one of the most respectful and well executed interviews I've seen on this channel. The interviewer has done their homework and asked great questions considering the target of these talks (curios layman, not topologists). They let Lisa speak, breathe and answer questions with patience. I watch a lot of this kind of content, and while there is of course always room for improvement, this was excellently executed.
