it sucks that if Whitney Houston performed at the Apollo at that time the crowd would've booed her off the stage. I heard black folk hated her in the late 80s cause they felt she was too pop

@@coreyortiz9913 Bullshit! Whitney wasn't doing anything different musically than any other Black artist out in the '80. I don't have to speak on what "I heard", because I was there, I'm Black, and I'm a recording artist who had music out back then, and now. Whitney has always been, and will always be, loved by Black folks.

Her greatest honour yet she said. Accepted as just a great singer. Some things bother some Americans more than others......
@SmartRobot-wc2fb2 жыл бұрын
@@professormause Absolutely! I personally don't consider Teena Marie a very sultry/soulful voice like Lisa Stansfield is, though she was a great musician. Yet, black americans idol her as the only one white singer capable of being soulful. There are many other white singers out there that are much more soulful and sultry than Teena Marie and that black americans don't even know about. Mostly British by the way. Try to listen to Alison Moyet [Billie Holiday's cover of "That Ole Devil Called Love"], Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, Dusty Springfield, Alice Russel, Anastacia [she's from Chicago and a bit like Taylor Dayne], etc. For instance, if someone like Taylor Dayne did Soul/R&B it would be booed in America by black folks, saying she would be taking advantage of their culture. The same with Tina Turner or Whitney Houston doing some Pop or Rock. It's just crazy. Race shouldn't be seen as a limit to artists' creativity.

@@CelestialGatez 🤔 Although Lisa is mainly remembered here in the States for her 1989 “Affection” album, she’s continued success and remained quite relevant in the U.K. where she’s from. That’s probably why people on the eastern hemisphere consider her a legend, while we in the States just remember her as a cool singer from the NJS era. 🤷🏽♀️😐
@CelestialGatez4 жыл бұрын
@@CodyCole80 That's in the UK. We're talking about here in the states and on the charts where it generally matters. I can list quite a few artists who are popular in other countries but if they aint settin it off in america you can't expect them to be recognized as "legendary." Now if the person who posted this comment is from the UK then they get a pass. Totally understandable. But it's a reach to say that and be from america.

You're the only one who said what I've been saying over the past decade about Lisa...errbody was jumping on me post after post on social media platforms. Them damn cigarettes ruined her voice to trash over the years...but good news bro...seen some recent concert posts over the last couple of months on here and it seems she's quit smoking and salvaged what's left into something promising and presentable going forward for her diehard fans as she's creeping into her late 50's...UK Festivals this summer in Peterborough, etc...she's sounding much better....check it out.
@florenciagarcia21032 жыл бұрын
She was smoking during this time too. In an interview, she said she used to smoke 45 cigarettes a day and started smoking when she was 16, but dabbled a bit before it. For someone who smoked that much and to add the rehearsals, concerts, interviews, and recording her albums on top of it, her voice still sounded incredibly clear and pristine. I love her music. She truly has a wonderful gift. In the same interview from 2014, she said she quit after trying for years. I think she still sounds great! 😃
