But isnt non duality the 'recogintion' that there is no 'i am' . The 'i am' creates the illusion of separation

No... He didn't repeat "I am" with the breath or anything like that. Nissargadatta specifically told people not to mindlessly repeat "I am". You are missing the entire point if you think this is what he did.
