My Reno guy made the best design suggestion- if possible don’t put the shower niche in the wall you look directly at when entering. All the shampoo/condition/ razors, etc ruin the look! We have the pony wall between the shower and tub and that’s where he inserted a niche with one very tall space for Costco size bottles and then a much narrower space for soaps and razors. Best suggestion ever

Yup, mine is a sea foam green with a teal green glass penny round tile as an accent set into white subway tile. My house is 105 years old so the subway tile is the kind of tile that would have been there originally. My shower door contractor gave us great advice just last week: there are two types of shower enclosure glass, clear and traditional green-blue (denoted by the color seen along a finished edge of a piece of glass). He said that cool neutral bathrooms look best with clear glass showers and warm natural color bathrooms look best with traditional green glass. I thought that was GREAT advice. And it reminded me that it's always good to ask your contractor what they think - they see it all, every finish & fixture from cheap to cutting edge - and trust me because of that they have MUCH better taste than we do! This applies to plumbers, painters, electricians. Just because they work in a trade does not mean they don't appreciate good design....they most *certainly* do appreciate beauty and they love to share their insights vis-a-vis good design.
@marylhere2 жыл бұрын
The contractors who did my bathroom decided that the light fixture should be above the sink and the vanity should be fitted into the wall and the wall board should be put right over the tile and brackets for the toilet paper holder and towel bars. I noticed light coming through the base of the shower from the basement because they had cut away a good bit of the floor the entire base supported below by a one inch wide aluminum strap. Cracked and had to be replaced. The electric heater is crooked. The mirror isn’t centered over the sink; the only outlet is behind a fixture I told them I was going to use for storage. They replaced the window with clear glass. I swear they must have been high. So many things to notice when held captive. And they weren’t the lowest bid. I know I know….I should have been more forceful. I didn’t want to make a fuss. To be fair the drywall (marine board) is flawless. Obviously their specialty. It’s better than it was. Forgive the rant. Having a Facebook fight with contractors who seem to think it’s okay to work high AND uninsured.

You could also install a large medicine cabinet as your mirror. Doubles as additional storage and gets things off your countertop. Also if you have a separate bath and shower, you can install a shower curtain rail for your bath and instead use it to hang stuff on like wet towels or clothes.

I love my tiny honeydew green bathroom, which is in the exact configuration as the dark bathroom with the striped shower curtain. Home circa 1945. With the window right in the center of the shower/tub and bright white tile 4X4. The one window faces east and it glows in the morning. When we make it ADA accessible, I plan for some light marble floors with a small border,. As a 60+ with arthritis, I'm toying with the idea of a step-in tub/shower or keeping it a apron tub and shower combo.

To add more storage to our small bathroom, we installed a 6ft tall shelf in between the studs. It's about 4" deep - just wide enough to hold lots of bathroom products (ie. shampoo, mouthwash, prescriptions, etc.) We made a 18" wide barn door to cover it. It works really well and looks adorable.

#4 - a minor mistake that many (but not all) folks do: leaving the toilet seat up! It costs $0 to fix. Of course, it has to be important to family members. We replaced the builder-grade toilet SEATS with slow-close seats. No slamming seat lids anymore. After watching a few of those KZbin videos of toilets being flushed with the seat closed vs. the seat open, well, that convinced several family members to put the seat down.

_[I'll try to keep this short, otherwise I could go on like a crazy person about this topic.]_ *_...cheering loudly from the sidelines...._* Oh....my....word..... *YES!* A toilet lid (or worse, the seat AND lid) left up / open is *_so bad_* on so many levels. I'll give you two: 1) For the 36 people in North America who haven't heard yet, when you flush the toilet, bubbles are created and burst in the air, literally *covering everything in the vicinity with urine and fecal matter* if the lid's open; 2) It looks like unholy heck! Seriously---a toilet lid left up looks like some greasy hillbillies live there who haven't bathed in months and who often just go on the floor because it's too much bother to get to the toilet. Just *UGH!* What utterly floors me is that people who leave toilets open would likely *never leave their kitchen cupboards open,* or their oven door, or their car doors when parked, or leave their trousers' fly open....or a hundred other odd, eyebrow-raising habits. Ugh---again. I still sound like a crazy person :(

Thanks for another great video - this one is full of useful ideas I will come back to. One tip I'd like to add is about lighting and to think carefully about symmetry. I have a double basin in my bathroom and each basin has its own wall light above it. The whole assembly looks nice and is symmetrical, BUT the centres of the lights are further apart than the centres of the basins - so if I use the left basin the right side of my face is in shadow and if I stand at the right basin the left of my face is in shadow. When I get to re-doing my bathroom that's going to get fixed.

I feel like you *can* have dark if you really want it, but it takes a bit more effort and thought. You can totally do an entire bathroom in slate, or something similar, but do the whole room in it. Dark colors only make a room look larger if you do the whole room in them. Something like an accent wall, or a darker shower stall is going to chop up the space. If you really want dark, you have to commit to it. You also have to be super careful about the lighting. (You may also want a separate space like a dressing room or vanity table if you're someone who likes makeup.) I feel like the only thing you really have to avoid color-wise are medium tones. You can do super dark, or light. Anything in between is going to look dingy and dirty.

@@EmnM2010 I feel like you have a lot more flexibility in terms of bathroom design when you're designing for guys. (Husband and I are both guys.) I also feel like color is best either super bold, or very traditional. Ugly happens when people want to split the difference.

Thank you for the great tips! Thinking of a black and white bathroom, a neighbor said a large format shiny porcelain tile will show all the foot prints and hard to keep clean. Anyone with experience or advice on that? Alternative is shiny white onyx on floor and one black onyx wall, rest white.

At first I thought this would be annoying and useless, but I stuck around and she did a great job! Also, what are you taking with your coffee!? I’ll have one too… that energy and enthusiasm is so great

There are certain colors, like cream or light pink, if you're caucasian, that will have an effect of softening the lines in your skin, esp face. Always a plus to feel good

Thanks Lisa for the very helpful tips. Also would like to know how to choose the right chandelier ( style and size) for different places such as dining room, above the staircase… if you could do a video on that, it will be awesome!

I’m a builder and nobody ever talks about sun tunnels for bathrooms and hallwAys. During sunlight they are awesome. The aren’t that expensive either. Sun tunnels!

Love this! Awesome tips. I worked the paint desk at a hardware store for several years. I would try to talk to the customers about their project. Whenever painting the bathroom green came up I would try to have a bit of a discussion about it! Sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. Fine if your shower or tub is separate-- oh I am bathing in my beautiful fern room, but not at the sink applying makeup!

Great tips! But I have a few questions. How dark should one go for a really small bathroom with no windows,? I am looking at getting a Carerra marble quartz countertop with next to no veining and what veining is there is more taupe/brown than grey. The cabinet will be a dark, ashy brown colour, like espresso without the warm tones and the carerra pops off of this. (The white vanity choice looked absolutely ghastly, like primer. I just could not!!!) Floors are a vinyl plank, lighter brown/grey/silver blend. Tiles are oversized 12 x 24 and pretty much blend of white, grey, with a bit of taupe. I like SW Gossamer Veil or BM's Sea Salt but those, at 60 LRV, thereabouts, but I worry that this may be too dark. Ordering swatches of Balboa Mist and Pale Oak and want to put a much lighter version of whatever I pick on the ceiling to create that envelope. Hoping I don't need to paint out the trim in bathroom which is Cloud White and trim all over the house is Cloud White. We have to have a shower curtain so something not too wild and crazy, and I hope to keep navy blue towels. Please tell me I am on the right track here.... As well, my backsplash for the countertop is going to be matt off white penny tiles. Also, I plan to have the shower curtain pulled back when not in use and almost to the ceiling. Rods will be dark/black, any artwork same frame colour. . (I will be custom making shower curtain.)) Is this height a good idea? Ceilings are 8 feet. Any advice you or anyone can provide is welcome!! PS - I hate cold hard greys.... and I am trying to pick colours that work as best as possible with the (for now) Shaker Beige in the rest of the house. (That would actually make a muted blue the best choice for the bathroom) I discovered I quite like some of the warmer greys and greiges... good thing with marble look countertops right?? Pls help, I am ready to burn this house down and build a much bigger bathroom with windows!!! LOL Love your videos!!

I have a condo with small bathrooms and one tip I would add is what I did in my second bathroom, which has a tub. Instead of a shower curtain I used a half glass wall. It makes the bathroom appear bigger.

Well, THIS should be good! Matching fluffy toilet seat covers/ tank covers/ contoured toilet rugs with coordinated crocheted toilet paper roll covers? Sliding glass shower doors? Green walls that make your reflection look like you have a terrible case of jaundice?... So many possibilities!

Thank you for your informative videos full of great ideas. Question I hope you answer, am about to redo our small bathroom and it has floor to ceiling beige tiles everywhere. Wondering if I can only tile the new shower and sink areas, and paint the rest all white including around the toilet area, instead of putting tiles on all walls as is the case today? Or do I need to tile around the toilet ?

Just finished my bathroom with black marble tile on floor and all the way up the walls. One greystone textured accent wall with black floating vanity with white top and vessel sink, 8'x7' walk-in shower fully enclosed with 12 fixtures and full-length niches with built-in lighting. 12 recessed lights in the ceiling and 3 wall mount sconces. Biobidet prodigy, heated floors, and towel warmer. Couldn't be happier with how modern and awesome it looks. Was afraid about all black all the way to the ceiling, but the accent wall, the vanity top, and the tons of lighting make it work perfectly. Plus the shower is an oasis - I can go in there, dim the lights and it feels like a secluded sanctuary.

Hazard of wall-mounted sink: For many years, I lived in a very spacious rental house built in 1912. Post WWII, it was converted into 5 apts. Mine was the 900 sf 1st floor. The bathroom had a colorful turquoise wall-mounted sink and matching tub. Having been a spacious back porch before the conversion, it was large. I'd noticed the crack on the wall beneath the sink but ignored it. After maybe 6 decades of use by many renters, while I was getting dressed one morning before work, the sink came off the wall as I was using it. Fortunately, I was able to hold it up and prevent the pipes from being torn out of the wall as well. I stood there, trying to save the pipes by holding the sink perpendicular, and surveyed the room for something to prop it up. I needed to let go without causing a disaster. I needed to be free to call the landlady and then go to work. Nearby, was a large rattan armchair and it appeared to be a good height for a prop. While holding the sink, I was able to wrap my foot around the leg to scoot it over to the sink. Yay team! It was the right height to support the sink! I called my landlady who had a little challenge comprehending the news the bathroom sink had fallen off the wall, but she was a peach and said she'd take care of it right away. She'd inherited the home which her parents subdivided after WWII, and loved taking care of it. I went to work and was just a few minutes late. The sink was reinstalled. I researched how to reinforce the sink and learned of leg kits for wall-mounted sinks, sold in hardware stores. $20 super simple solution. I'll never again have a wall-mounted sink.

I’m often accused of writing novels. Well, if the story is well told, why not? Readers appreciate a good story and yours is a most entertaining read. I could picture both your agony and ecstasy! You’re obviously a writer, and a really resourceful one at that. Touché!

@@MarinaAndriola-p1c I love your thought that "if the story is well told, why not?" Comments section or wherever! People DO love a good story. I hope you will keep writing! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed mine and thank you for the encouragement to keep writing. I haven't published anything but reading this story again makes me seriously consider a collection of stories about my beloved landlady and the house divided into 5 apts, lived in by some truly one-of-a-kind characters!

Id like tub and shower (together) options. I hate the norm bathtub with curtain or sliding door. I dont have room for one of each so I need updated shower/tub space ideas that makes a small BR look larger. I want a tub too as everyone wants a tub sometime.
