As a geologist, I always recommend marble-pattern porcelain tiles instead of real marble, which is soft, porous, and chemically reactive. It can’t be cleaned aggressively and shows every scratch, etch and stain. High-quality porcelain “marble” tiles are nearly indistinguishable from natural marble nowadays, so the look is just as good, but they are so much more durable and stay good-looking for decades.
@1Channel13 жыл бұрын
But does it shiny like real marble and is it cool to the touch, (which saves on your a/c bill)??
@1Channel13 жыл бұрын
Also porcelaine is only man-made in France and must be super expensive to import, whereas marble is a nature-made stone.
@MaryBarranti3 жыл бұрын
@@1Channel1 Porcelain tile is also made in America. It costs slightly more than ceramic, is very strong, and comes in non slip finishes desirable for floors and showers. However, I'll be looking at Lili cement tiles after this video.
@993mike3 жыл бұрын
Agreed - as a long time tile & stone supplier, there is no comparison in the ease on care and durability of porcelain vs real stone. Porcelain originally was developed mostly for commercial applications where they excel, but in the last 30+ years they have become a mainstay in the residential market. Italy has always been the leader in design trends and quality for porcelain tile, and the nice thing is that you can get awesome materials in the $5 - $8 range per sq ft, which is less than the typical labor to install it depending on your area. Use stone in areas where it won't hurt you, like fireplace facings, backsplashes, etc - but leave the high use areas to porcelain, and the stone and wood looks look phenomenal

I agree 100%. My nephew installed marble in the kitchen countertops . OMG he found out after cooking how easily it stains. He quickly regretted it.

WOWSERS!!!! Another amazing informative video. I am an interior designer working in the flooring plus more industry so I deal with tile all the time. Our company reps a few different cement tile lines but oh my gosh....LILI is amazing! Your explanation on grout color is spot on with what I tell my customers. The one struggle we have is the types of grouts not just color that are appropriate for their projects...i.e. traditional sanded grout vs. epoxy grout. The epoxy is more expensive and so many of our installers don't like to use it. I get that it's more time consuming, hence we do pay them more. I'd love to hear your take on this. Keep up the good work...I'm such a fan! Oh and I love love your glasses! :)

Hi Lisa. Thank you so much for the awesome tile lesson. I so appreciate all of your professional expertise and love your enthusiasm. I loved your comment on 'badgering your tile installer' to have tiny grout lines installed. Perhaps in a future series you might share your tips and experience in dealing with 'the trades'. The average homeowner simply does not know how to deal with painters, tilers, wallpaper installers, finish carpenters, flooring installers etc. I'm not saying 'the trades' will take advantage of inexperienced homeowners but if you don't know the right questions to ask or have some knowledge on how to get what you want or what to look out for, "the trades" may take advantage. Of course, that is why designers should be involved!! Love your channel and congratulations on over 200,000 subscribers!

Wow, love the stone mosaics of the fowl on the wall behind the stove. What a wonderful way to do a work of art that serves a practical purpose. I am loving the variety of examples you are showing because each is so well done for its purpose and placement. Nice to see that Lili has all the more common motifs in use these days along with some designs and colors that are a bit different and not so wild as to become hard to live with. 3/8" depth of color is just superb. Oo, I do love copper. The dragonfly is stunning and really at a distance can look quite geometric and not give off the impression of a cutesy animal motif. Loved the fireplace open between the living and dining areas. The black grout on the chevron pattern makes it less exhausting, relentless to the eye. Just terrific examples were given to show us the choices.

Great video! I sell tile and will refer customers to this. Selecting tile can be an overwhelming process and the price range is vast. Knowing your budget is essential. I had a customer fall in love with a vein cut white onyx the other day. Not sure if she’s willing to drop about 4K on her shower and tub tiles . One cost that people often don’t take into account is the freight. Tiles are heavy and delicate and the shipping isn’t free. If you’re selecting tiles from different tile vendors you will have to pay for separate shipping. I love Lili too 💙

Lara!!! 🙌🏻 This is such a good point - you always want to go in to ANY project knowing your price range!!! 💛 And the shipping tip is huge!!! Tile is NOT easy to transport!!! 💕😂 Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us, and thanks for watching!! 💚

Oooh tile! It took me years to get my head around tile, this is a great video Lisa, I wish I had seen it in 2003! Thank you for recommending 1/16 inch grout on modern tile design statements. We're putting a modern and sleek wood stove in our Modern Farmhouse build and the tile background will be a column of 12 x 47 inch large format tile in a light grey acid washed porcelain tile installed stack bond right to the ceiling. Now I know to instruct the tile contractor to keep a 1/16 inch grout space. The grout color may be a terra cotta color which will emphasize the stack bond..

Great video and you have a great editor. While on lockdown I gave my little galley kitchen a DIY freshening up. I didn't want to pull out my tile backsplash, realized I didn't mind the pattern, so I gold leafed (then sealed of course), the whole thing and I love it. The tile you presented with the little metallic accents I found beautiful, so its obvious I love the shiny! Thanks again for all the info.

Thank you!!! This was tremendously helpful. I need to redo the flooring in a home that has knotty pine walls and ceilings. We’re keeping the wood, but we have a traditional style and don’t want to go cabin/lodge rustic. I’ve been having the hardest time figuring out what kind of flooring to put in. Tile that looks almost like limestone with a soft mottled look should work well. Thank you!

@shannontraver15073 жыл бұрын
Lisa, I learned the hard way ($$$) the importance of knowing the deflection ratio with tile/floor. I would say one of the most important things with tile is knowing if your floor can handle the weight. I picked terrazzo tile and needed to reinforce my floors to support it. It was very costly.
