There is no place like my home. One big party every Sunday. If you want to see New Orleans come together anywhere in the world, get a second line going and watch how people come out of no where to join in.

Treme....North Claiborne Avenue.........1950's people picnic under the oak trees that lined the neutral grounds....Mardi Gras.....Zulus ......Indians...Jazz funerals......2nd lines.....During segregation that was Canal Street on Mardi gras for us black folks....We didn't miss a thing.......Good times..,.. My uncle owned a home and bar in Treme......One Mardi Gras as a child sitting on my uncle's stoop at his home a witch doctor with a huge bloody bone in his hand snuck up behind me......I was soooooo frightened ....I don't recall touching one step to get in the house........Near 70 years old Iam so glad to have witnessed those real New Awlin's times....At a Jazz funeral on Claiborne near Canal...in that cemetary.....Dizzy Gillespie flirted with my beautiful aunt and invited her to his hotel room......She said yes !......If Dizzy was still living he would still be waiting for that hookup in that hotel.....LOL....Soooooo many good memories of the 7th ward.........That's why I can never leave... I don't want to know what it would be to........Miss New Orleans....

To continue .....Something I forgot to say...... Those beautiful oak trees existed before that interstate bridge seen in this video.....It basically destroyed this historic neighborhood.......During segregation North Claiborne was lined with black owned businesses.........that bridge helped to destroy those businesses..... also ......crack was poured into our black neighborhoods after integration to stop the advancement of our people.......I know this to be true .......I witnessed it........Just giving a little history of the times....... Nothing can keep us down...Not even Hell and High water (Hurricane Katrina)........ In New Orleans style ..."Do what ya wanna"........But as for me....... It's back to the music and 2nd lines !!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't mean any harm, but it's just a way to get folks from New Orleans to get out and vote. Take away something that the people love the most and you got a rebellious on your hand. If they don't do anything soon about the state of affairs in Louisiana, Jindal would have all of them in worse shape than Katrina did. And by the way, I enjoy listening to Rebirth Brass Band.

4 years later, but! There are second lines every Sunday afternoon from Oct-May (except holidays), and they are organized by different Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs, in different neighborhoods all over the city. The route is published online a week or so before the parade. There is a starting point, and 3-4 stops at different places, usually bars but sometimes corner stores, people's homes, and the second line will stop at each point, where people closer to that point will already be waiting, and the band and second line (group of people following behind the band and social club) will stop there for 15-20 minutes and play, then start parading on to the next spot, until they reach the end. Anyone is free to join at anytime. You can plan it, or you can just happen upon one and join in, for as long as you want. I've second lined for 3-4 miles before, and sometimes just for a half mile, or just watched from the side. Traffic is stopped for the time the second line rolls through. There are people rolling carts selling beer, soft drinks, water all along the route, and there's more drinks and food at every stop, so you can stay hydrated, fed, drunk, high, whatever you want. This one, the Sidewalk Steppers is in winter and is always one of the most antcipated, fun, wild, and packed second lines of the season, but they all follow this format and are all great and special. I've lived in New Orleans for 5 years and I think the Second Lines are about the most amazing thing in the city--how anyone can hear and see people dancing and playing great music in the street, for hours, just because...and not feel happy is beyond me. It's one of the city's greatest cultural legacies, it is still 100% authentic and 100% free to all to participate. Nothing like it anywhere else in the world I've ever encountered (not every week!) I'm excited for the season to start again, which is how I ended up here on this page today. Her filming shows perfectly what it's like to be in a second line!

The opinion of many (including myself) is that although the second line drumming remains, many of the brass bands have deteriorated into blasting noise based on one or two chords - this is a prime example. Two thumbs down. The old men that created the music before would whup those "musicians" upside the head.
