Lisbon pilot disembarking from Adonia in rough seas

The P and O ship Adonia leaving Lisbon on 3-11-14. This was the Pilot's second attempt to leave the ship. A smaller cutter found the seas too rough to take off the Pilot so this larger cutter took over.

The small pilot boat is being thrashed around quite a bit, but I bet it’s clean and Safe, unlike the floating hotel/casino that smells like vomit, sewage and a haven for disease.

What a bunch of 'Cowboys'! Turn the Ship to port and create a lee at a safe speed. Pilot should be wearing a safety helmet and Hi-viz. You never walk down the inboard side between the Ship and cutter (pilot school day 1 stuff).

Perhaps the location didn't allow it, but I would have had the ship turn to port to make a bit of a lee

You're correct, but the Tagus estuary is fairly narrow. And if he had turned to port I'd have a boring video!

Provide a lee at a safe speed, altering course when safe to do so. Pilot stations marked on charts are chosen to be in open areas where this can be done safely and effectively, never mind videos.

Shipping companies make huge money, but still use that ancient rope and planks ladder for pilots. It is so unsafe, and pilots seldom wear helmets. Can't you have an automatic ladder or something to make it safe for pilots?
