This is a basic formula of a circle: x= cos(angle); y=sin(angle); Changing the frequency of sin or cos will give you different shapes Thanks to Jules Antoine Lissajous for investigation of these figures.

change in frequency, not amplitude. The time period, or degree of phase cycle in this case prompts to speed and modulation of the shape being created.
