Listen as a 17,000-year-old conch shell is played once more

After laying silent for more than 17,000 years, an ancient instrument is heard again - a deep, plaintive bleat, like a foghorn from the distant past. When archaeologists realised that a large conch shell discovered in the Marsoulas cave in the Pyrenees had been modified thousands of years ago to serve as a wind instrument, they invited a French horn player to play the conch in a sound studio. The horn produced clear C, C-sharp, and D notes.

Shells were still sounded in many dharamshalas in Panjab as late as 1987. I am sure it is still happening today. Shells were / are known as 'Sankhs' (pls. correct the spelling) Remarkable reporting by BBC

Shame on you for your bad grammar! What you should have written in the description is "After lying silent for ...". To lie and to lay are different verbs. The former is intransitive, the latter transitive, which is to say that it demands an object. "Laying" is present particle of "to lay" and therefore requires an object that is missing in the sentence. It is therefore incorrect grammar. Please protect out language from such foreign (US) intrusions that only impoverish our language.
