The "Whitehouse" in "Pigs" is actually Constance Mary Whitehouse CBE; 13 June 1910 - 23 November 2001) was a British teacher and conservative activist. (copy and paste from Wikipedia). And all-around extremely unpleasant person I would expect from the song. I love your reactions to amazing talent, and happy to see you've tapped into "Pulse". So much more amazing stuff from them.
@Plan9wood2 жыл бұрын
Thank you I was about to get into this myself. Apparently at that time she attacked everything from Pink Floyd to Doctor Who and tried to censor them. I’m sure most people over the years has take. White House literally and then inserted whatever administration in at the time that wasn’t liked to the lyrics. It is very deceptive and the person being complained about is probably long since gone and forgotten except for this particular personal attack Roger decided to make on her out of nowhere in this song. This album is genius and timeless, but this reference kind of does out a time stamp on it and makes Mary Whitehouse known to folks who otherwise would have never heard of her.

If you like Bowie-try Brian Eno, father of ambient and Bowies producer amongst many others. He had like 4 glam rock albums in the 70s. I saw some classical on yer feed- Mozart man. “A little night music” “Rondo A la Turk” “marriage of figgaro”. String quartets are pretty dope. Also check out Handel, Brahms, Vivaldi (four seasons) Jazzz? So much, but I’m thinking progy. Miles Davis “live/evil”. Herbie handcock “mr. Hands”. Dave Brubeck “time out” Thanks for letting us vibe out with you.

Waiting for you to do Sheep! It is the most intense part of the album. Floyd has a totally different kind of mastery from Yes. Both are among the best rock ever recorded. Floyd are masters of leaving a sense of open space and time in their music. It is hard to play and record the way they did. There are really no extra notes. Grand gestures, meticulously placed and jawdropping effects, and really tightly connected concepts define their work. Don't wait too long to do Sheep. You need to hear how it connects to the album! Yes are masters of cosmic imagination. Today, there are some bands that have more speed and instrumental tricks, but none have ever bettered them in the sophistication and beauty of their composition - and their instrumental ability is still top-notch. These two prog bands are miles apart but both are great.

In case you're wondering. The building on the cover is Battersea Power Station, on the south bank of the river Thames in London. This was opposite my old school and I vaguely remember when this inflatable pig was flown from the chimneys. The power station was closed and derelict for many years, and has now been converted into a block of luxury flats overlooking the river, close to the new U.S. Embassy.

Pigs represent the people whom Roger considers to be at the top of the social ladder, the ones with wealth and power; they also manipulate the rest of society and encourage them to be viciously competitive and cut-throat, so the pigs can remain powerful. The whole LP is based on Animal Farm by George Orwell.

Fun fact about the album cover: Thanks to this album, it's now famous and is the Battersea Power Station in London. That really is an inflatable pig, not Photoshop (it was 1977). It broke free of its moorings and floated off but they got it back. When The Simpsons Movie opened in London, they flew 'Spiderpig' over the station referencing Floyd.

Waters did use the ambiguity to those who didn't know about Mary to good effect in his recent tour. As he said: "The last verse is about somebody who tried to censor English television to keep sex off of it who was called Mary Whitehouse, which was convenient ’cause it means I can say, “Hey, Whitehouse,” and a lot of people think I’m singing about the White House in Washington, D.C. And I am now, because nobody cares about Mary Whitehouse anymore. She did try to clean up British television by making it sort of evangelical-Christian-friendly in ways that are unhealthy, in my view".

The Animals album is Pink Floyd's (and in particular Roger Waters') response to criticism directed particularly against them by the punk movement. The punk movement, this new protest movement from United States, will permanently shock a part of British society by rebelling against the archaic values that rule it. Titles like: (Anarchy in the U.K) sum up all punk thought, they all cultivate, besides this hatred of the system, that of their elders (rock bands) whom they consider finished and good to throw away. With Pink Floyd at the head of the gondola, which sabotaged the true values of rock and its three chords by making it too intellectual and sophisticated. To the point of finding Johnny Rotten (Sex Pistols) walking down Carnaby Street flanked by an "I hate Pink Floyd" t-shirt. Wounded in his increasingly voluminous pride, Roger Waters decides to deliver his point of view (philosophical anyway) on the new world order

Amongst me and my punk buddies there was always a sneaking admiration for "Punk Floyd", they certainly had the attitude, cynicism and disdain down pat.
