For live service, what happened is simple: Anthem bombed on launch, and after 2 years, they gave up on it. And when they did that, they also decided to change DA:V from live service to single player. So the game had at least 2 years of a big dev team fully going down the live service path, before that course correction. You can see a lot of aspects of the game's design that seem to point back to that.

There's more, just a bit less flashy than BG3. First and foremost: - WH40k Rogue Trader (and I'm saying this as a complete newb to the 40k part of WH) - the lore and worldbuilding are the absolute best. The writing is amazing and companions are unique and romances are masterfully done (especially the murder space elf Marazhai) - there's literally something for everyone, voice acting is superb. The setting is dark and unapologetic and wonderfully refreshing. I cannot praise this game enough and for me it not only filled that BG3 hole, it rivals it. It, DAO and BG3 are now my absolute GOATs. - Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 (same dev and setting as Avowed - the RPG that's currently set to release in Feb nexty year, but these are cRPGs). The series is like DA in that you will also upload the save from 1 into 2, but here you will continue with the same character! You can, obviously, change everything at the start, race, class etc, but your decisions and state of the world and characters and all that carry over so playing 1 first is most certainly highly, highly recommended. And it's worth it too - 1 plays like reading a very, *very* good fantasy series and you just want to know what happens next. With the world, history, companions.. everything. It's fascinating!) - Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (fantasy, same dev as Rogue Trader, one of the precious few games where I actually like a goody-two-shoes companion because of just how well written they all are) - Greedfall - this one is an RPG (without the c), victorian fantasy with Spanish vibes. Very nice combat, really like MC, they are intelligent, unexpectedly kind and just a well written character. Companions are nice, there is romance too. There's a lot of mystery, exploring wild places and fighting strange monsters. - Divinity Original Sin 2 (and 1, presumably) - previous game(s) from Larian. Fully voice acted now. Really dig the sense of humour, the characters and writing. Will feel very much at home after BG3, though system is quite different. - if you're ok with a set character, then obviously Disco Elysium.. And then you have the older titles, too.

As a fan of the original DA since DAO I feel the same way, Amy. Totally understand what you feel and your disappointment. The thing that pulled me the most to DA is the dark tone and strategic combat. I remember it took me several tries before being able to defeat a dragon (which I forgot the name), and Flemeth. This was born from my love of the Infinity Engine of Black Isle (of Baldur's Gate fame). Veilguard is a game that I don't recognize anymore, and I heard from another youtuber that the writers actually destroyed Ferelden. Making all our choices, character, stories from DAO irrelevant.

That shows that even with hardcore fans of both game studio and the Dragon Age franchise itself, there are still too many hardcore fans who are giving up on it! Perhaps my position could be considered suspicious or "influenced" because I haven't even played the game, but I did some research including spoilers, read different (serious) reviews and talked to people who played the game. I don't believe the game is terrible or a failure, just as I believe it can please and enchant different niches of players. However, given my personal preferences and expectations, which I consider realistic given the history and tradition of DA, I can say that the game doesn't have the same appeal and enthusiasm that I had for the conclusion of this cycle. I won't go into details because that would require a long text. Even if an opinion is not objectively positive, it may have the merit of being representative when finding voices with lucid and similar arguments. I understand that preferences and expectations are subjective and I don't want to be unfair to the game, but this adapted formula is not compatible with my vision regarding the format and development of the tittle in different departments. Let's just say that I'm in no rush to play it now and I hope that Bioware can achieve a financially satisfactory result involving this product. As for players who are enjoying the experience, no problem; I'll maintain a more nostalgic stance.

The moment a game abandons its uniqueness just to appeal to a broader audience and prioritizes awareness over good writing is the moment the game loses its identity and makes the fans angry, turning the game into something that most people will sort of like from something some people wouldve truly loved. Hopefully Bioware will come to realize this and get their act together for ME5, even after three disappointments in a row I am still hopeful and hope to experience the bioware magic again.

It is very frustrating that it gets flak for being diverse. Diversity is not the problem, the problem is just that the writers are not the greatest at writing. There is such a thing as subtlety. And it is very important in storytelling. Especially in fantasy where allegory is the name of the game (sorry Tolkien, it's true). Something that people get wrong about this whole controversy is that "games aren't political"... that's absurd, of course... games & stories in general have always been political. Especially ones that people say aren't. DA:O, for instance, calls out racism explicitly with the interactions between Humans & City Elves; it mocks & condemns reactionary nationalism in the Dalish Elves and Loghain; it calls out the oppression of organized religion by having the Chantry complicit in slavery & murder -- similarly, the Shale DLC also condemns slavery & praises slave rebellion; Leliana is a heretical lesbian church nun & former spy; Zevran is a bisexual (poly?) assassin who is depressed & wants to die after murdering one of his lovers on contract; Morrigan is a highly formal, witty witch who has cripplingly bad social skills due to an abusive & treacherous mother (who is also a near-immortal demigod?).... ....I'll have to stop, because as I think through it, nearly every single thing that happens in the game is a highly charged political/social statement with a heavy-handed embrace of diversity. So why does this game get a pass on this stuff? Simply because the writers wrote it better. They wrote it in a relatable, human way. It's nothing to do with content, everything to do with presentation.

"It does not mean it is objectively good or bad, there is no such thing when the subject at hand is art." That statement is objectively false. Videogames, much like movies, books, etc. Are products, we can tell if they're good or bad. Just because someone likes something that sucks, doesn't mean it is good. Like a book or movie, the writing matters a lot. Dragon Age Veilguard, objectively, is written poorly. "Bioware has always been aces at storytelling." End of ME3. Andromeda. Most of the good writers are just gone. I never understand why people think this is good combat. It is the same thing from about hour 10 to maximum level. The combat doesn't change really at all, you do the same thing, for dozens of hours, the enemies are basically always the same the entire way through, you have barely any abilities and you have to spam regular attacks to use them. We're 9 years post Witcher 3, which is significantly better combat The storytelling IS bad. Pacing, stakes, emotional investment, its all either incredibly shallow or dealt with so fast you get no time to feel anything. Also has a tendency to be undercut with very...'marvel' level humour. On its own as a game, it would be mid, maybe slightly below, as a dragon age game its awful.

I agree the first act was kinda meh and that the story grew on me later on. Though... It's a lot of time to invest in it until it really starts to take off. As for Rook and Varric being friends from the begining, I think it was OK. It was a different narrative experience, where we have the feeling that they were already bros. It's kinda nice they took this different approach. MAkes us feel like our character has a whole life going on even while we're not playing.

Really enjoyed your video, I hope you make more. But I would disagree that you can't judge art as objectively good or bad, particularly video games. after all, if the game simply doesn't run, then that would make it objectively bad. I think other design elements can be considered objectively bad, like puzzle design, enemy AI, etc. All that being said, it think it's totally possible to still enjoy an objectively bad game, and I don't think anyone should feel shamed for liking a bad game. You're free to like whatever you want, don't let anyone yuk your yum.
@amytheseeker2 ай бұрын
Interesting take on the "objectively bad" part. I never thought of it that way. I always saw art as something entirely subjective, so... I just don't feel comfortable saying something is good or bad (relating to art, that is). But mechanics and some design (since it relates to function) I believe can be judged as good or bad depending on if they work or not. Am I making sense?
@jonnyxquest2 ай бұрын
@amytheseeker yeah, I would agree. Video games are a weird hybrid for art. As far as the look and design of the game, it's purely subjective. The same goes for the content of the writing. Whether you like the story or the characters seems subjective to me as well. But even then, if the art in the game is rendered poorly, missing textures or broken meshes, you could call that objectively bad. Though I wouldn't say Veilguard suffers from that, it seems to look and run just fine. Likewise, with the writing, the content may be subjective, but the structure can be measured objectively. Think back to how you may have been graded in any creative writing class, things like plot holes or contrivances, character motivations, and expository dialog. All of those things in a written story can be judged on objective merits. When put in a game, especially and rpg with player choice, the way those choices are written and presented can be judged objectively, whether your choice was clearly presented to you before you made it.
@zephyr8072Ай бұрын
I feel the main issue with the story and characters is you aren't allowed to disagree or have real conflict anymore, you're prevented from RPing your character and reacting in any way other than affirmitively or passively. This is why characters like Taash come across as annoying and preachy. There's nothing wrong with characters that are abrasive, petulant or even stupid. The key is to allow paths to let them actually develop, confront them, conflict with them. I'm not even talking about options to be mean or evil, just to be able to tell them when they're out of line and guide them. If you ask me this trend began in full force with the ending of Mass Effect 3. You were not allowed to RP your Shepard, you couldn't disagree or conflict with the Starbrat, or present it with the blatant evidence that it was clearly wrong. You had to accept its broken logic and then choose an option from the Endingtron-5000. I think this flaw and arrogance in writing is now _everywhere._ No matter who you want to play as, you must conform to what the writer wants even if it's opposed to what the player wants without even the illusion of choice.

You can't control your party, there are not enough dialogue options and your choices don't seem too matter much. You can't disagree or be mean... it all takes a lot from the immersion and experience

Sadly it's not even worth yarr-harr-ing to me, it's just an abomination.

The Veilguard feels like a nightmare you never want to re-experience. The game would be way better if they erased Dragon Age before the Veilguard. If they wanted to make a real Dragon Age game, they should've stucked with the lore, kept the factions like they should be, the crows for example. They are contract killers, not the good guys, they are horrible monsters, buying kids and training them to an assassin, regardless of the losses. The lords of fortune steal from whoever they meet along the way. The preachy crap using words from OUR world, Traash sucks she wants to be respected and is disrespectful towards Emmrich calling him names and trashtalks Neves clothing. WHY do you have to respect someone who doesn't respect others? The top surgery scars in a MEDIEVAL FANTASY GAME doesn't belong in Thedas, the tiniest wound could kill someone if no potions nor mage is around. The only things I like is it's graphics, the different hairstyles and the final 2-3 hours. I want to be morally grey and tell Traash to leave Damn Krem was so interesting, he is so well represented in my opinion.

I wouldn't be so drastic. The game is not terrible. It's just not good enough

@@amytheseeker its my personal opinion I hate the Veilguard, played and finished it twice all I want is to erase my memory. I loved the Dragon Age series, DAO came out at the perfect time, the game saved my life. I will always be grateful for my stepfather he gifted it to me in december 2009. I dont know if you played Dragon Age Origins back in 2009, if not you´ll never understand WHY I hate the Veilguard, most day one Dragon Age fans do. I am happy for you that you don´t hate it, but I do I am 31 almost 32 in a few weeks and I´m no longer the targeted audience, the Veilguard feels like its made for teenagers and damn am I lucky I survived my teenage years. thank you for answering I appreicate it

If they had better writers and be less preaching it would have gone better.
@amytheseeker2 ай бұрын
Absolutely. that would've fixed 70% of the problems. The combat is cool though. Nota gonna lie. I like it.

@amytheseeker I agree combat was good. Maybe give control of companion and make the skills less flashy

Nah, not like that. I also got frustrated, but there are worse games. You should check the GTA remakes or WarCraft Reforged. There are worse things that could happen

I loved Veilguard. It's more of a cinematic action game, with a handful of significant choices. Not so much a traditional RPG. However, I have had a fantastic time with this game. Its beautiful, bug-free, the combat is excellent and the overarching story was incredible. Especially how this story tied the history and lore to the origines of elves, dwarves, blight, more. Anyone who says "writing bad" hasnt played this. Maybe the inter character dialogue was generally cheerful (I didnt get that from Davren or Lucanis or Neve, but Bellara and Harding sure). A brilliant game. Not what I expected, but brilliant.
