Just to clarify... im a pilot student and Its AM and its VHF 118-136MHz not UHF. however you may be able to listen very well in FM band. This spreding coills trick actually works and has been used for many years. Great video

I did a similar adjustment on the AM band to allow the radio to tune in shortwave broadcasts. All I did was cut the large AM coil, for the tank circuit, in half and tune various potentiometers. I was hearing international broadcasts very easily.

108 - 130 MHz aircraft radio is AM not FM,. By adjusting the coils you are detuning the IF. You can make it go higher past 108 MHz BUT the modulation will still be in FM, you will not be able to understand the AM transmissions from planes or airports. Ok so beyond the air band past 136 you get back to FM frequencies BUT these FM stations will be Narrow band FM, FM broadcast is Wide band FM

The VHF airband uses the frequencies between 108 and 137 MHz. The lowest 10 MHz of the band, from 108-117.95 MHz, is split into 200 narrow-band channels of 50 kHz. These are reserved for navigational aids such as VOR beacons, and precision approach systems such as ILS localizers. As of 2012, most countries divide the upper 19 MHz into 760 channels for Amplitude Modulation voice transmissions, on frequencies from 118-136.975 MHz, in steps of 25 kHz. In Europe, it is becoming common to further divide those channels into three (8.33 kHz channel spacing), potentially permitting 2,280 channels. Yes, Aircraft band 116 to 136 is AM. You can slope detect FM but Not AM. FM Broadcast bandwidth I believe is 75Khz. Wide FM .

+Bo88y Beretta Hey, sorry for the late reply! The "knobs/tuner" modify the frequency that the radio can listen to. I'm no EE expert, but I'm pretty sure that when the static is louder, the frequency is higher (again, I think).

Extending the range of frequency the radio can receive. Most of the time, only the coils need adjustment to receive the end of the fm band.

You can get used scanner radios on ebay for cheap that let you listen to AM aircraft radio. All scanners will cover the 118-136 Mhz band. You don't need a fancy digital scanner any old one will do.

Fingers frequency is 123.45 AM Guard frequency is 125.1 AM Even the UHF aviation frequencies are AM. FM should not receive aircrafts.
