Yes' In a Word Live three disc set is a good way to hear what classic Yes songs sounded like during this period. Disc one also has incredible performances from the Yes Album lineup and disc three has some Drama album outtakes done live and a killer live version of Shoot High Aim Low. Yes' Wembley 1978 broadcast, the source for Don't Kill the Whale from this live comp is a must hear, you can find it here on KZbin or over on the Yes Forgotten Yesterdays download page.

The bass-led section early on this side is certainly much extended from the original studio version and was probably done that way as they weren't doing 'The Fish' live at that point. I'm sure I've heard some of the runs and tricks heard here incorporated into later live versions of The Fish (or, more accurately, Whitefish) This record, though somewhat overlooked when Yes are discussed, is the equal of the better known Yessongs.

And there it is. That magnificent bass solo. I wasn't lucky enough to see Yes at that time, but on the Symphonic Tour Chris Squire re-created that solo, and I can tell you that from my front row seat at The Royal Centre in Nottingham it was something I will never forget. Yesshows is patchy for me due to the song choices, but GoD and Ritual make it an essential purchase. And just over three months after this was recorded the band were in the studio creating Going For the One.

I’m late getting to this video, so most likely you’ve been reminded already. But yes, when Jeff and I tied for your radio show contest, Alan White had passed, and if I recall correctly you hadn’t watched any live Yes yet. So Ritual from Songs From Tsongas felt like the perfect request at the time. You were able to see the classic line up with White, and watch a video which highlighted the rhythm section of Yes, so in a sense it was a tribute to Squire as well.
@wendellwiggins37766 ай бұрын
YES's INTERWOVEN instrumental LUSHNESS was sublimely unsurpassed from any genre. I can't stress enough the power of the emotional & spiritual impact they had on us LIve at the time with those classic lineups, specifically. At times the music felt as though it was a separate flawless organic Force onto itself.

Yesshows are all live albums where the energetic performances of the time really shine. But 'Ritual' and 'the Gates...' on Symphonic Live 2001 are my personal favourites. The concept is the same as Awaken by Jon Anderson and Todmobile in 2015: Yes + orchestra, but the orchestrations are excellent and the chemistry between Yes and the orchestra is outstanding. Even if you can't make a video due to KZbin rights, please listen to it in private.

Great reaction Jim! You compared it a few times with Yessongs. And though the sound quality differs a lot, I find myself playing Yessongs more than this one. It’s not the energy or musicianship, which in both cases leaves nothing to be desired, but I guess it’s the coherence of the songs as a complete concert. Yesshows is somewhat patchy to me: more a collection of - great - songs than the concert registration that Yessongs offers (though of course it isn’t a registration of a single concert). And to my taste the ‘tribal’ part of Ritual is simply too long. I’m always glad when Steve picks up the soleil theme again
@rudolfbecker43138 ай бұрын
Sorry to all fans of this live album, but my favourite Yes live album is and will be YESSONGS - forever 🤘 it's the originality of playing the well recorded studio songs with this raw power, this energy ... it doesn't matter, that most of the songs aren't as filigrane as in studio. And also sorry to all the fans of Chris bass solo - nothing's gonna beat The Fish 🤣 my favourite bass solo and maybe the best of rock history 🤔🤘
@yes_head8 ай бұрын
Right up until -- or even through -- 'Drama', Yes were almost always better live than on record, which is remarkable, considering they set a pretty high bar with their studio work. That changed with '90125' when they were beholden to sequencers and click tracks, and the new audiences they were playing to wanted to hear the songs just like the record. Also, the 80's was no longer about extended bass or drum solos, was it? Speaking of, Chris' solo on "Ritual" is expanded, as is Alan's. That's also Chris scatting toward the end of his solo (as seen in the Queens Park video). But what's frustrating for Yes fans is that so little live stuff has come out covering this period. There are *many* well known bootlegs that fill in gaps in the '76-'79 time period, but Yes for whatever reason doesn't seem interested in putting it out. They must figure hard core fans who already have those boots won't pay to replace them with a band-authorized version. But who knows. As long as Steve Howe is still kicking and the demand is there (and wallets need replenishing...)
@JimNewstead8 ай бұрын
That begs the question, are the bootlegs any good? There’s a few one heard of different bands that are amazing but mostly sound like they’ve been recorded on a potato!

Gates live is and was a marvel; a wonder of the world. Excellent record and reaction. And speaking of wondrous... Yes messed with heads by naming the song "Wondrous Stories"but the video "Wonderous Stories", which is kinda freakish. So I asked Google "wonderous"...and it said: "Did you mean "wondrous"...then goes on to explain: "Did you mean: wondrous Definitions of wondrous. adjective. extraordinarily good or great ; used especially as intensifiers. synonyms: fantastic, grand, howling, incredible, marvellous, marvelous, rattling, terrific, tremendous, wonderful extraordinary. beyond what is ordinary or usual; highly unusual or exceptional or remarkable." So it is not a synonym for wonderful, particularly, and wonderous has 1/10 the number as wondrous. Sometimes people try to correct my name. The term is more akin to "miraculous" as in Ouspensky's "In Search of the Miraculous". Gonna listen to Gates again. Very pleased. A new one for me.

@@JimNewstead btw, in the percussion solo of Ritual that’s all 5 playing percussion. Chris is on Timpani. Jon is banging away on all kinds of metal including an Electric Slinky which Patrick turned him onto. Steve plays Timbales I think and Patrick is making the groaning chant with Mellotron or Vako Orchestron. Alan is hitting his drums that were connected to a Minimoog Synthesizer somehow. He probably got the idea from Carl Palmer. Oh! Chris sings harmony with his bass guitar 🎸 which is nearly impossible to do live. The album was mixed by Chris Squire and it was his first time at that.
