Quite probably the greatest 18:57 on KZbin ever recorded. Cut this man in half and he will have ‘Yes’ all through his body. He knows every song, every album, every chord change, every weird Jon Anderson lyric. He’s the master and I defy ANYONE to question this ranking. It definitely IS the ultimate list and we must bow to the master. “We’re not Worthy” “We’re not Worthy” Party on Scot……….

I was born in the fifhties, so I was able to witness the production of the seventies, probably the best decade ever. I was hearing a lot of bands (rock mainly), and also Symphonic Rock, Jazz Rock, Folk, Blues, Country, well you can see that I was a big consumer (up till today). When I bought Close to the Edge everything changed; I already had the previous YES albums, but this one blew me away. At this point, I must state that I am a musician (drummer), and this is the reason why I consider CTTE the best YES album of all. Of course, Tales from Topographic Oceans is extraordinary, and is the peak of what you can expect from a band that had made CTTE. They had charted all top sales and their live appearences proved how technical and intricate YES sound was. For us, musicians, it was an incredible challenge, for they were all ``virtuosos`` and Jon Anderson was singing for his life. Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe were on top of all the lists of their instruments, as Bill Bruford was. This is the changing point, in what YES career is concerned. Bruford was the drummer that built YES identity, through a complexity of patterns and rythms he created, alongside Chris Squire, a Rickenbaker man, with a stonewall sound never heard before. For those who like to hear (or play) drums, CTTE should be an obligation, a trully Bible of percussion work, with a perfect "mélange" with the music that his mates were producing; Bill was (is) a master in the use of skins and cymbals, a "monster" in what music and silent moments are concerned. The simple and personal choice of his "sound" (there´s no other snare drum sound equal), tells you this man knows his job, Obviously I could dwell on all technical aspects of this work of art, but what really matters is the fact that YES would never be the same, again. Now you are thinking that I neglect Allan White´s work, on Tales from Topographic Oceans; not at all. What I think is what this piece of art would sound, if it was Bruford behind the drum kit. Of course Allan is (was RIP), a very good drummer, and perhaps it was unfair to him, having to replace Bruford, after CTTE. The first 5 albums are the ones that buid and consolidated YES identity, and when Bruford left it was King Crimson that profited with his genious and the band began driving a new road (era) of exquisite and intricate music, far from what KC had done before. That is a fact, and you can state it by listening to those albums, in which Bruford was present, in the life of those bands. In those days, back in the seventies, YES was considered one of the most difficult sounds, to replicate on stage, and Bruford was an "allien", in terms of inventive patterns and drum contributions. I think that you can guess, by now, my favourite list of YES albums; of course, Tales from Topographic Oceans is one of the best five, but Close to the Edge is number one. We´re talking 1972!!!, and the peak of creation, for all the reasons I stated back then. To finalize, I must say that I didn´t expect such a quality record, with this formation, in "The mirror to the sky"; it is still very fresh, but a nice sensation of the YES complexity (yet simple approach), that deserves a lot of more listenings. I am rather pleased with what I heard, and certainly will hear more. It will surely climb, in some of your lists.

Great ranking ha! I was pleasantly surprised with your ranking go Magnification! Have a love/eh relationship with that one, but I agree with Wakeman that he would have done a better job with the orchestration considering his recent solo output ... i wish he would do another one with Jon A. You are right Mirror to the Sky is the prog Album, and def best with JD on it. Relayer is CTTE 's dark little sister? haha, love that.

Re _Fly from Here:_ Back when the _Drama_ version of Yes was most current, there was a Yes retrospective radio program which included a concert clip containing the song "We Can Fly from Here." In that clip, Trevor Horn introduced the song as "the first song we ever wrote together," but it had not made it to the album. Decades later, when _Fly from Here_ was released, I listened to it and wondered why they didn't have the nerve to release _Drama_ as a double album!

Im not a really big Yes fan, but I do wanna get into it. This list is a pretty good suggestion list alongside ranking. I do like that you have an album atypical of a #1 spot, it shows how passionate you are about the band. As a big King Crimson fan I might say that THRAK is their #1 album, but Im too big of a sucker for Starless and One More Red Nightmare to not say Red is #1.

Don't understand why Wakeman hates it because in my opinion he did some of the best playing he ever did. Marvelous! I still have yet to hear all of the albums, especially from Talk forward, so I don’t have a ranking. But I can say currently my top two are The Yes Album and Going For The One. I have stated many times that Olias of Sunhillow is my favorite album, but side 2 of Going For The One in its entirety, namely Wondrous Stories and Awaken played together as a single piece of music, is my favorite album side ever. I just prefer the entirety of The Yes Album more than side one of Going For The One, so The Yes Album just edges into number 1 for me.

Heaven & Earth Note: I did not include the first two albums because they hadn’t really found themselves until the third album. I pretty much rank all the Trevor Rabin albums about the same. They are all top-shelf prog pop. I find Union, as imperfect as it is, generally underrated and Magnification generally way overrated (to me it’s largely pretentious disingenuous cheese fluff). I’m really enjoying Mirror to the Sky… but being so new, its ranking is subject to change either positively or negatively, but probably not by much. Return Trip replaced the original Fly From Here, so I only included that one. I like Return Trip more because, with Horn’s vocals, it’s more authentic. Not only did Horn write it back in the early 80s, but it’s also the true sequel to Drama. Plus, the album was perfected and completed and even darkened a bit. Relayer and Close to the Edge are pretty much tied in my book. Tales from Topographic Oceans is simply the greatest album of all time.

I can't believe your favorite Yes album is also mine! _Topographic Oceans_ blew me away at first listen (on _8-Track,_ which is the _worst_ way to listen to _any_ Yes album!), and I have never changed my mind. I know this album gets a lot of disrespect, but when I put on headphones and listen to any of those movements, I hear something new every time. If _TFTO_ had any more layers, it would go all the way to the centre of the earth! Yep, that's a Rick Wakeman reference...and speaking of, how about a rating of all the solo albums done by each Yes member - _Olias of Sunhillow,_ _Ramshackled,_ _No Earthly Connection,_ etc.?

I feel about Topograhic today, the same I felt about it when it came out. Some great moments but it lacks coherency. Sections sound "stuck together" and are melded with open ambiance as opposed to the terrific transitions found on CTTE and Relayer. It's more of a Steve Howe album since he's soloing (way too long) on most every section. Squire's bass is lacking the contrapuntal layers he's displayed so well on other albums. White is a bit sloppy -- a rock and roll drummer doing his best within a more artistically demanding environment. (Something he managed very well on Relayer). And yeah, it can get indulgent. Overall, it'd make a great single album but its length adds to the "epicness" of it all, but all in all, I'd put it as low as 6th on this list.

Being a critical Yes fan I’m happy to say that Mirror to the Sky exceeds all expectations. Sounds incredible through a proper HIFi. I think the only reason Steve Howe sings is to contrast how good Jon Davison’s voice is. Great album. As for Union if you delete the Rabin songs it’s a good album.

Yes ok you love topographic and that’s cool but without a doubt you cannot get away from the fact is that Close to the Edge is a perfect piece of prog, there is no comparison to any other prog album, other bands have their masterpiece but listen to the edge and every note every word every section is perfection, 3 amazing different pieces come together in complete harmony. I'll tell you what...I fully expected Mirror to the Sky to be more "boring" from Yes. What's left of Yes? Steve Howe! Yeah, I know, he's not an original member, but he has been with Yes for sooo long. Who else has, that is currently with Yes? No one! Upon my second listen I am being pleasantly surprised. This is really a good disc! Howe's playing is really tasty and good. Sherwood's bass evokes Squire at times. The melodies are sinking in to really appreciate this latest offering. This is far better than the last 3 disc's. I am happily surprised and will certainly purchase this. For anyone thinking about buying Mirror to the Sky, listen to it at least 2 or 3 times before judging. You may be surprised as I have been.
