There's nothing more beautiful than the end of Great Escape/Falling From The Moon. Those lyrics (ending the story) and moving into that gut wrenching guitar solo is, I feel, one of the greatest moments in the history of music. There isn't a time I've ever listened to that where I haven't choked up, in 30 years.

Masterpiece. My favourite one from Marillion. Remembering so well when I bought it in Berlin in 94, during my military duties. Was feeling miserable being so far from my family in France and just passing through a sentimental break I didn't expect. This album save me from desperation. Gorgeous sad and extraordinary music.

How anyone can listen to The Great Escape - whether for the first time or the thousandth - and not be moved, especially at the Falling from the Moon part, is beyond me. I still turn into a blubbering mess every time I listen to it.

This album has completely changed my way to listen the music. I must have listened to the whole album 10-15 times before i could get into it! because the music was so different and every song is so incredible intense and deep, this music caught me completely. After that i listened to it every day for over 2 years. A tipp for everyone: put on headphones and listen in the dark, then the music works even better...

Something about side 4 from the ‘94 released vinyl: The double-LP vinyl release of Brave features a double groove on the final side of the album, providing two endings to the story of this concept album. The first groove plays "The Great Escape" as heard on the CD, followed by "Made Again", providing the happy ending; the second groove plays "The Great Escape (Spiral Remake)" and 7 minutes of water noise, providing the downer ending.

I was in London when Brave was released, I bought K7 and travelled via Prague to listen to it with my older brother in Warsaw with lights off!!! In the morning we were completely dumped before going to college. Will never forget those moments

As a preferred "Fish" guy when it comes to Marillion, this was the album that reconnected me to this incredible band after struggling (outside of "Easter") with the earlier Hogarth stuff. A return back to their progressive and conceptual excellence.

Amazing album, one of my favorites by Marillion. Side story - my wife of 43 years died due to alcohol addiction in early May 2023. I had already purchased tix to attend the Leicester Weekend (late May) and really needed that getaway. Prior to the trip, I emailed the band and requested a song be played in honor of my wife, who had suffered greatly both emotionally and physically before her merciful passing. I asked if they would play Made Again, because in my mind, she was freed from her earthly shackles and no longer suffering - she was made again. The song was not on the songlist for the Weekend shows to that point. To my utter amazement, they closed the last show (prior to encore) with Made Again, dedicated to my wife!!! I was, to use the British terminology, gob-smacked. What a beautiful thing for the band to do. By the way, during my journey through the disease my wife suffered, I latched onto the Invisible Man. I do not know what inspired that song's lyrics, but it described exactly how I felt during the early stages of her alcoholism. I was invisible to her because her body required alcohol when she would relapse. The lyrics describe, in amazing detail, what I was going through, all the way to the frustrating final lines "or leave me be, leave me be". Not sure if h intended the song to represent what a family member goes through when dealing with an alcholic loved one, but the lyrics nailed it. This helped me understand how utterly powerless I was. Already got my tix for 2025 Leicester weekend and cannot wait for the show. This band is amazing.

You are totally reliving me back in 1993 or so. I used to travel for work. I had loved Marillion since A Script For A Jesters Tear In the 80s. Anyway, I was driving up in Edinburgh listening to Brave. My favourite album of all time. The last 3 tracks are unbelievable and mean so much to me. Your reaction was priceless. Like me in the car going, "this is outrageously awesome" You need to review This Strange Engine next.

I was 17 when Brave came out and I loved it. Absolutely loved it...right in the middle of Britpop as you say (which I also loved!). 30 years later (can't believe it's that long) and I still love it...but parenthood has changed me. I can't listen to this album without full-on crying. The whole of Side 4 (Brave, Great Escape & Made Again) is just a blub-fest. Context + parenthood. Haven't listened to this album in its entirety for probably 10 years or so, but watched it with you here and ive no tears left. Well done Marillion.

The album actually ended after The Great Escape, but the record company didn't want a sad ending. So the song Made Again was recorded and added as the last track. Clutching at Straws is also a must listen, the best album with Fish. And if you're planning to do a Valentine song, check out Cliche by Fish. A great song about how to express yourself to your lover ❣️

When Steve Rothery comes in on Falling From the Moon I think it may be the most beautiful thing I've ever hear. It's also good to know it's not just me who squeaks on their guitar strings, although it sounds a lot less musical when I do it.

What a great album. The cover says it all...Masterpiece! It´s rare to hear things like this. The era of great bands, musicians playing together and making art seem to be lost. At least not in numbers like back in the days. Now it´s mostly about home recording. Everyone doing everything by themselves. People don´t play live as much anymore. Music festivals is getting less and less. Places with scenes where bands can play is disappearing.

Such a wonderful album that brings back so many memories. When I first bought Brave back in the 90s, I played it to death, and the music is still so haunting when I hear it again today. Next album would be Afraid Of Sunlight, which explores the destructive power of fame. Trust me Jim, it's another masterpiece!

Album ends...and breathe... As good an album as I have ever heard and has there ever been a more perfect ending to an album? After the doom and gloom of the previous songs and the anger and sadness of the awesome 'The Great Escape', 'Made Again' just uplifts and, for me, redeems the entire album. As someone who recovered many years ago from severe depression, I can truly relate to 'Made Again' and attest to how accurate a portrayal of emerging from the deepest dark into the light this is. I remember the world being 'made again,' fresh and new as if seeing it for the first time - such a special song.

“prog masterpiece” 💯 The happy ending bit wasn’t guaranteed in first release - the double vinyl release had a double groove. When you played it, you didn’t know if you would end with Made Again or with 7 minutes of water noise… stunning concept

Quite true. They were initially going to do an extended version of The Great Escape, which didn’t contain the Falling From the Moon section, but when they listened they thought it was too depressing. Rothers had written the acoustic intro to Made Again for his daughter, and they took that and crafted the song and tacked it on the end. I like both concepts, and I like that the vinyl had the double groove (I never owned it, however). I do wish they’d put both editions in the cd set so you could have the option for whichever floated your boat, though I guess you could always cobble your own together via the extra tracks, but it would have been nice to just have the proper flow.

Well that's something I never knew ! I was going to relate the time I took the vinyl back to the record shop two or three times, saying that it wasn't playing right. The guy at the shop was completely unaware of the double groove.....as I was, until this day !

@@Ifyoudonttakeitucantfakeit No, you’re sort of right. As FFTM fades away it is replaced by the sound of lapping water and some birds. It even exists in the Wilson Remix as well. Plays for 20-30 seconds before Made Again begins.

@@NmDPlm31 I don't have the OG Vinyl or the Remastered either but I know both of these had the second grove with Spiral Remake and 6 minutes plus of water. They had a different hidden track on the CD I believe (if Wikipedia are to be believed). Spiral Remake was shorter than the usual Great Escape and is on the CD/BluRay as a BluRay bonus track.

This album brought me back to Marillion. I'd been on a musical walkabout for a bit ,so you can imagine my surprise to find this out of place gem in the mid 90s. Absolute classic. Can't say more. It just is.....

Jim, that squeaky sound on the classical guitar in Made Again is actually Steve’s fingers on his left hand scraping on the thickest 3 strings when he changes chords. He’s also fingerpicking with his right hand without a pick. In the 1960’s when I started that squeak was generally frowned upon. But in the last 4 decades it’s become quite common and appreciated.

Bless you, Jim. I have enjoyed many of your albums on your channel in the time I have been coming here, but this is one of my favorites. So far. It does not happen often, sadly, but on those rare occasions where a group & their music syncs with my spirit, it is instantaneous. I can tell in a minute that this is going to be something special that starts a whole new rabbit hole for me to explore. The last time that happened to me was over a year ago when I tripped over a reaction to Devin Townsend's "Kingdom" EMG video. Blew my head clear off and I haven't found it since! Now he is my favorite artist of all time. I have seen most of your reactions to his stuff. Most of us die-hard Marillo-heads don't think much of "Made Again" since it feels so tacked on, but honestly, it's a great song. I forget how much I like it. Anyway, love that you've gotten around to experiencing "Brave" finally, Jim, it's always great to see someone enjoy it for the first time. This album is still a masterpiece.

This is a very different experience, listening to the four sides, as opposed to the CD where there is no clear break from one album side to the next. To answer your question about how they did it. This, I think, was the first time Marillion started to work with recording everything they did jamming in the studio then piecing it together later. I remember an article about it but can't seem to locate it anymore. I think it is the process they continue to use.

Jim, you say you knew The Great Escape previously. How does it compare now you've heard it within the context of the album? This is the stand out song for me. I lost my father in 1994, 6 months after Brave was released. "They shower you with flowers when they bury you" is exactly what happened, when we said goodbye to him, and I take comfort from it every time I hear it.

This might interest you: Marillion’s current resident producer Mike Hunter was at this time their keyboard tech and created an electronic soundscape that was played before every show. It used bits or Brave and from their backcatalogue and slowly built an atmosphere that would lead into the lapping waves and foghorn at the beginning of the album. Another one: the original LP had a double groove which either made you hear the full version of Great Escape followed by Made Again or you got the shorter (movie version) of Great Escape ending with the sound of lapping waves for minutes. You never knew which version the needle had caught.

I understand that you've chosen to run through Marillion's studio albums, but the truth remains that Marillion's live performance of these songs is much greater than the album versions, mainly due to a much stronger vocal performance by Steve Hogarth, not to mention how he augments his singing with his visage and hand gestures. My favorite live performance by far was taken down several years ago. It was the b-light TV version that contained the backdrop showing the precisous little girl with lots of curls, in a pretty pinafore dress, swinging back and forth on the back drop, smiling and laughing. Meanwhile, The Great Escape is being performed, and it hits you like a boulder that people, and life, were so very hard on that girl that she chose to throw herself off the bridge and fall from the moon, when her life really had just begun. I raised a daughter, and this total mulit-media event wrecked me emotionally each time played the video. Maybe it is a good thing it is no longer on YT. In one of your earlier reactions to Marillion, I kidded (maybe) you about once you've reacted to Marillion, why react to any other band? You responded with something like "there is lots of great music out there". Have you changed your mind yet?

Jim, I can't speak for the present day (and unlike you I don't possess a turntable) but when the original LP was released, depending on which groove you began Side 4 on, there was an alternate ending for 'The Great Escape'. Perhaps you can try locating the stylus again to see if you can locate the alternate groove? I won't spoil the ending just in case....Great reaction as ever, Kindest, Kevin (you did my Gaza request for me a while ago)

Oh wow... I didn't realize that Jim hasn't heard Lamb yet. That is definitely one I would suggest reading the lyrics and studying the packaging first. Or, while I love the vinyl, as a first time listen perhaps reacting to the Illustrated version here on KZbin. I do believe one of the sides is subject to blockage though, from what other reactors have experienced.

"Brave" is such an emotional sucker punch, maybe the most emotionally powerful thing the band ever committed to tape, but yeah -- when connected to "The Great Escape" and "Made Again" it's pretty devastating. It's actually very cool, considering they just rocked your ass off with the "Lap of Luxury"/"Paper Lies" combo. And then they reduce the listner to a puddle with this crushing, dramatic ending. And I'd guess that's why the album didn't do better in the UK charts. All those Brit Pop bands were about posing and nihilistic whinging, instead of confronting a really tough topic and laying their emotions bare. Plus I'd imagine Steve Hogarth's voice wasn't considered "cool" by the hipster tastemakers. BTW, also credited on Brave is Darryl Way for the arrangement for "Fallin' From the Moon". I assume this is the same Darryl Way who had been in Curved Air. There's a relatively obscure early 70's prog band for you to check out some day, Jim.

I just hear Marillion , not any other band is it a bit biast??? Maybe. This was the first truly h album that was him and John Helmer who wrote Made again, my husbands favourites. I think when h came along I think Marillion became a band not Fish and the Marillion. I think h gelled well... 34 I think that time has shown that Fish was a better solo artist just MY opinion. If you want to see them singing this to help us getting through the pandemic look up made again lock down. Also get some tickets!!! Their conventions in Leicester !
