Funny to watch someone listen and hear this for the first time. Brings smiles to us Prog type listeners. This CD spent many months in the disc player of my car when it was released. Just so indulging I couldn't stop listening to it. Enjoy the rest. The whole thing is a trip for sure.

This is one of very few perfect albums for me. Not one note or part is out of place, yet it never feels quantized or over-produced. This is what happens when every member of a band plays 100 percent proficiently and with purpose under the direction of someone who knows exactly what it should sound like. That specific magic can't and won't ever be reproduced or found elsewhere. Bravo.

@@JimNewstead its amazing that it translates to a first-time listener. When you actually dive into the story, its about a man in a coma who cant decide whether he prefers the real world or the world in his mind while he was in a coma after attempting suicide. Its really fun to see peoples reaction to the musical spectacle and how accurately people “feel” what is the theme of the music.

The album is based on a story about a man who is in a coma while the good and evil of his mind battle for superiority. So your comment about it being like a split personality is spot on. I don’t normally listen to much of this kind of music, but I generally consider de-loused to be one of the greatest albums ever made. The guitar work on it is absolutely phenomenal. Rodriguez-Lopez absolutely outdid himself on this record.

I think what contributes to the sound and feel, aside from the excellent drum sounds, is that all the ambient stuff in the background and weird tones aren't from experimenting with studio production but it's from largely analog guitar effects. I presume it is all recorded through guitar speakers. Also a bit of trivia, pretty sure Flea from the chili peppers plays bass throighout and john frusciante is often credited with trackong some guitar parts too

Thanks Jim, when I first heard this album it made all the other music seem flat for a while. It is in a different category to most other stuff as a listening experience. Only King Crimson’s Red and Lark’s Tongues in Aspic has the same visceral impact for me. My brother had exactly he same thoughts when I lent him the cd, a pure adrenaline rush. It’s not an everyday listen, but when you are in the mood it is tricky to beat.

This was their best album imo and one of the best rock albums ever, if not *the* best from start to finish. Rick Rubin (producer) brought just a little bit of control to their inherent wildness and it was a perfect match. If Frances the Mute (the song) had been a part of Frances the Mute the album, it would be a close call for their best. But to me there is nothing that matches early Volta except some stuff from the big dogs of the 1970s like Floyd and maybe one or two Tool albums. It's a short list!
@TheAlibabatree2 жыл бұрын
I couldn’t disagree more. Deloused wears its influence on its sleeve a bit too much for my tastes. They grew into their own unique sound later on. For my ear, Frances does everything this record does, but way better. Then Amputecture takes them to their creative peak. Then after that, they become a completely different band. *edit: i just realized you called this a “rock” album. I suppose given that context, this is their best straight forward rock album.
