Found a cool trick to amp up the sound of Fear Inoculum. Sounds like classic Tool now with much more slam and authority, and Maynard comes though with more presence. Just speed up in Audacity from 15% to 25% using the "Speed/Duration" function.

My personal favourites are the first 3 (fear inoculum, pneuma and invincible) and still can't decide which one's the best. Got a bit disappointed with 7empest at first, because all the music critics were saying it was one of the best things Tool has ever made (some of them even comparing it to Third Eye). I think it's great but not comparable to Third Eye... Descending and Culling voices are great, and Chocolate Chip Trip is an interesting experiment.

This album takes music to an unprecedented level, it has beautifulness, balls, incredible mastering... I was afraid after 13 years I would expect too much out of this album and not like it like I love Lateralus. I was wrong, it's everything I hoped!
@williamcozart91665 жыл бұрын
I love it, but I tend to agree that Maynard at least is a little lethargic sounding, it seems like a stylistic decision he made on this one to stay between like, 2 & 6 in intensity, while the rest of the band goes everywhere from 0 to 10 throughout. He used new vocal textures and tones, some effects and layering/harmony in some parts which sounded great, but it would have been the icing on the cake if Maynard had belted it out a few times, not screaming like T & L, but those long sustained yells where he matches the pitch of the guitar in perfect unison, like the end of Vicarious. That would have been great, but I love it anyways, IMO this is the best album to come out since 10,000 Days, in all of music.

There are a lot of shallow listeners out there that expect Tool to give them something easy to listen to and get into. They want Maynard to scream and Danny Carey to do blast beats, and Adam Jones to shred. Chaos Thierry there is a hidden “as below, so above and beyond, I imagine” reference in Pneuma I’ve discovered. well maybe not specifically referencing that lyric, but that idea. we’re bound to this flesh but must “reach out beyond”. at 12:12 in this video do you hear the white noise, or subtle oscillation / pulsing you hear just before Justin comes in with the opening riff? well from about 3 and a half minutes in (14:21) to around 5 minutes (16:03) there’s ultrasonic frequencies present in the 24bit 96kHz release. see here: imgur.com/a/hqfhzcl if you transpose the frequencies down enough to get that audible, you can hear this: www.mediafire.com/folder/hyjjakun418zv as I said it goes from 3 and half minutes throughout the (Spirit) section and it ends just as Maynard says “bound to this flesh” probably just an Easter egg or something. those oscillating tones aren’t tied to any one instrument or effect, and it’s not a watermark as it’s the only song I’ve looked at in audacity and seen such behavior.

The litany against fear comes from the book Dune by Frank Herbert, my favorite read besides East of Eden. It goes like this; "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. What makes him so good is his ability to do JUST ENOUGH. His drumming is so tasteful. He doesn’t rely on modern metal drumming gimmicks. He’s more of a Bozzio style drummer. After 13 years, there's absolute zero chance of impressing everyone. Every band has a peak and sweet spot and for Tool it was clearly during Aenima and Lateralus. I never expected this album to surpass that, but be a really strong late stage entry, possibly their last album considering how long it took. And considering that, I think it's rather fantastic. I actually like it more than 10,000 Days, so that's a pretty big statement (although I don't resonate with the dark tone as much as I do with the optimistic one of Fear Inoculum).

Andrew Clark Might be Justin. I’ve heard that all four members contributed a segue to the album. Danny’s is clearly Chocolate Chip Trip, and Maynard’s is likely Legion Inoculate due to that being the only segue to have vocals. That leaves Adam and Justin, and I think it’s Justin because Mockingbeat really sounds like something Adam would do. Some of the distorted mockingbird calls could be pick scrapes. Jim. You are the man - I’m about 24 hours (1-2 laps through the album) ahead of you, watching your reaction is akin to experiencing again for the first time, but with more depth, and with a friend who enjoys TOOL like I do. I feel like Danny is at his peak in this album, with Adam and Justin showing strong, but Maynard seems a little out to lunch. Culling Voices is beautiful and I think his voice is amazing, but definitely lacking the edge I’ve heard in every album prior to this one. Would’ve taken this from a 10/10 to an 11.

Maynard’s getting old; his voice isn’t what it used to be. But I do think that what he has done on this album does a lot to mitigate his age and use his voice to its fullest without straining it too hard.

Maynard took a step back purposefully to "let the instruments breathe." He said that in an interview.

10:19 I can assure you according to sources in the room, Adam played that solo in a single take with no extra's needed. Believe it or not, the set up on his badass guitar led way to what im assuming is a finely tuned Ghose Screamer or Screamer effects pedal. Sounds bloody fantastic on that gangster ass Deisel Amplifyer. Adam Jones is brilliantly unique in his own right. Glad to bear witness. Cheers Jim. 18:10 is Danny Carey straight up playing a keyboard. He does it again in Invincible as well.

The first time I heard this song I was so disappointed. I mean heartbroken. Didn’t even finish the track. At the advice of a good friend to give it another try I took some alone time and listened to the entire album without stopping with good headphones. Now I’m absolutely blown away. It’s such a slow burn type album with elements of minimalism that are better executed than ever before. It absolutely shows their maturity after such a long career. I’m just in love with all 6 songs. The tones especially on guitar are some of the best I’ve heard on any album. The sort of square wave fuzz he has going in the title track is so cool

you must must listen to this album from start to finish a few times. Don't pick out your favourite song always. Fear inoculum, Pneuma and 7tempst are the highlights but feel and sound so much more next to the rest

yeah there's definitely more multi-layering of guitars in this album as opposed to Tool's usual format. To brilliant effect, in any case

5:05 Jim’s smile. That one sound does the same to me. One single sound seemingly not linked to anything just stands out in a 10 min song.

Such beautiful drum work on this album?, right?🥁 The vocals are less forced than previous albums, there’s no screaming, yelling. The album sounds like a “lead drummers album” , as one review proclaimed. Yes some of the riffs are very similar to other Tool songs, but this is a solid return for the band after a huge time period.

“This is all just too much to take in really” I agree 100% man my mind tapped out somewhere in this stew of music and I was completely sober but felt like I was tripping balls. I should not have been operating heavy machinery 😁

The engineers and producers are just as much a part this album as the band. I’ve never heard such intelligently placed effects, clean drums, clean editing without being over-perfected and polished. You can still hear the fingers changing frets/string between notes, and imperfect cymbal hits but the sound is perfect. Genius

I LOVE your videos now, Jim!!!!!!! And, musically, this entire album was so on-point with about everything!!!!! I think that Adam Jones finally put on his big-boy pants for this entire album as well. And you were 100% accurate about that being a synth in the middle of pneuma. I think that Danny Carey was in charge of that as well, but 🤷♂️
@mugwump70495 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Danny does the synths. It's written in the album credits.

1:23 Haha, damn, sorry if you got harsh comments about you saying it sounds like a cello in the song Fear Inoculum. Pretty sure a lot of people had the same thought too. Hell, there are a couple parts throughout the album where I went "Ooh, two guitars. ...oh wait, that was bass I was listening to before!" 10:10 "This is the bit where you can hear several tracks of guitar, and I know everyone says they don't multi-layer, but..." - Yeah I know. They almost always never do that, which is probably a good live performance decision. There are only a few songs in their whole career where it's clear that they have. But it seems like Adam did it a few times on this album, and they sound great. Good ear, because I don't think I even noticed it on this song, though.
