Yes the US also split Panama off from Columbia. The US turned complete control of the canal over to Panama in 1999. The canal is having water issues and the fees they charge the US military are a tiny tiny portion of the US military budget.

Just to add to this, “Little Russia” is not just Putin’s name for Ukraine - it was widely used in the 19th Century”, hence the subtitle of Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony. Since my Russian-born, but (like me) Ukrainian supporting wife died a year ago from sepsis, my little boy has benefited from the care of a wonderful nanny (first a Ukrainian speaker) from Lviv. Whilst I admire Zelensky enormously, she tells me that he is not so popular amongst the Ukrainian people currently (perhaps unsurprisingly in such extreme a situation). I am an orchestral conductor who, before the invasion worked a great deal having studied in St. Petersburg in the late 1990s and have a pretty good understanding of the Culture as well feeling total dismay about what Russia has done to itself (and the havoc it is reeking in Ukraine) over the last 20 or so years.

Setting up a more robust European defence industry could be very achievable. European countries produce some very good weapons on all levels of the spectrum. The European countries of NATO could pool the purchase of different weaponsystems, then lease them to Ukraine and afterwards use them in their own armies. So NATO could order 500 french Leclerc battletanks and 700 Leopard 2's at the same time. This would diminish national tendencies and be profitable for the whole alliance.

I think it's quite obvious by now that war with Russia is inevitable, if the West wanted to support Ukraine they should have gone in all the way at the start of the war and Pushed the Russians back across the border. They should have then left peacekeeping forces in the country whilst Ukraine built up a sizable army and equipped them with modern weapons to deter further Russian aggression. Instead we now have an extremely dangerous situation with Russia firmly intrenched in eastern Ukraine and both Russia and North Korea building up massive armies which could attack inside Nato in the coming months leading to who knows what. If China decides to attack Taiwan America will be busy fighting in the south Pacific leaving Western Europe to face Russian/south Korean forces much larger in numbers. We face a very uncertain future because of a fear of provoking Russia which has now left us in a truly nightmare situation. Russia's economy is beginning to fail and if it comes to the point that collapse seems imminent and the future of Russia and it's people appears under threat could very well ignite nuclear war across the globe.

Honestly Russia would lose this war and be pushed back from everywhere if Ukraine were told that they had to mobilize the 18 year olds but in exchange the West would genuinely train and equip all of them. Which economically it could comfortably do, if it really wanted to. Only a lack of will prevents this outcome, not a lack of capability. Russia lacks capability to win. No U.S troops necessary.

Any negotiating is a loss, a concession from Ukraine to Putin and a pure gain to Putin. We may not assume Putin will stop when getting something out of the war. He'll just come back for more. The West couldn't defend Ukraine. If we couldn't stop Putin now, what makes you think we will be able to stop him when he'll come back? Or do we have to give him a next slice of concessions, a next slice of Ukraine? There were agreements: UN charter, Budapest Memorandum, various treaties between Ukraine and Russia, peace talks to avoid the invasion ... Putin didn't care. Putin understand only force and an impossibility to invade.
