Yesterday (08.02.2025), Ukraine was able to inflict significant losses on the Russians south of Pokrovsk and recapture a lot of territory. In addition, the Russians no longer have the number of soldiers and armored vehicles to make a breakthrough and then advance further, they are not even capable to hold territories they have conquered. In addition, the North Koreans have been back at the front in the south of Kursk Oblast since yesterday, but there too an entire battalion of Russians and North Koreans was wiped out yesterday mostly by FPV-Drones.

To put this into context Russia had an army that was ranked 2nd in the world. At the time of the invasion Ukraine was ranked 52. To explain how unbalanced this waris Ukraine had about 500 tanks at the start of war russia had 13,000. It is not just tanks, but planes, missiles, troops etc etc. Russia dwarfs Ukraine ten fold. However in 3 years and at a massive cost it has only taken 10% of Ukraine from the stating point. In March 2022 one month after the invasion it had taken 35% and lost most of it. The fact most russian bots on here will not tell you is 70% of the equipment ukraine uses is Russian not Nato. The number 1 supplier of weapons to ukraine is Russia based on equipment it left behind in the first 2 years of the war. Think about the 2nd best army in the world is now at the point it had to use North Korea troops and drones from Iran. That is how bad the Russian army is.

I believe that focusing just on the military movements is less than half the story. Russia can not financially survive much longer. They are stuck between a rock and a hard spot. Bankruptcy due to mismanagement which may lead to social collapse and an end to the war with 10s of thousands returning from war to no money or jobs but thousands of weapons, which may lead to social collapse.

I am not a 'Friend' of either Russia nor Ukraine. They are both a long way away from Western Europe, and what is going on between them is largely a fight in someone else's playground. From a cynical viewpoint, this stalemate has almost no real impact on the real world, but it is useful to see how bad both Russia and North Korea really are - they look weak and desperate.

Russian is having to use troops from North Korea. Do you think that suggests Russia is winning a war of attrition ? When we look at WWI it was never planned to be a war of attrition. What ended the war was not attrition but the development of the tank which allowed break through. The reason Russian is forced to view this as a war of attrition is they have completely failed in all aspect of warfare needed to do anything else. They have failed to get control of the air in ukraine, they have failed in combined forces to allow rapid movement. The only tactic they have left with poorly trained troops is to throw them forward on mass.
